Macbeth: The Good and Bad Side BY catl 924 Macbeth Essay How does Macbeth change during the course of the play? Macbeth dramatically changes throughout the play, especially his behaviour; In the beginning of the play, Macbeth knows the right from wrong, even when he does wrong he can’t Justify to himself why he is doing wrong. When the witches tell Macbeth about him becoming the King of Scotland he was interested in this idea but he never thought of killing the king to make the witches idea true, Macbeth couldn’t think about such wrong doing, he always had to get advice and be told by somebody lse what to do, so he wrote to Lady Macbeth and she suggested to him to kill the king.
Macbeth was very reliant on his wife in the beginning almost like a young child towards a teacher. Lady Macbeth is a very dominating character and can easily persuade Macbeth to do what she says – this dramatically changes throughout the play.Macbeth takes a lot of persuading to do the killing of the King, he asks Lady Macbeth to the deeds but Lady Macbeth called him a coward, in those days the men was meant to be the stronger one, Macbeth couldn’t have that name so he took the courage and killed the king. After the killing Macbeth was very anxious of what he had done, he didn’t want to do it he was pressured into it, he was nervous and frightened- he couldn’t pluck up the courage to put the dagger back, this suggests that Macbeth couldn’t face what he had done, he felt so terrible and scared- this shows that Macbeth was fearful about what he had done and had a lot of guilt. No ocean will wash this blood from my hands’ – Macbeth quotes this after the killing, this shows remorse for his actions, he suggests that he will never get over the killing and will never live with it. Every time he looks at his hands he will always see the Duncan’s blood smothered in them.
‘No ocean’ – The Ocean is the whole world wide sea this truly shows that nothing will ever change how he feels about the murder and the guilt. Macbeths way of coping with the murder was to not face up to what he had done, he’s way of coping was to ignore his wrong doings. The guilt and remorse he felt in the beginning of the play quickly changed; When Macbeth became King it seemed that all the remorse he felt for the Killing of Duncan went and the power took over. The witches suggested to Macbeth and Banquo that Banquds children would be Kings; Macbeth doesn’t like this idea and needed to get rid of them. Macbeth summoned two murders to kill Banquo and his children; suddenly all the remorse he felt about somebody else being killed had gone.
The power of being King had taken over.Macbeth felt so strongly about anybody trying to take over his title he did anything to anyone who got in his way. The interesting thing about the murder of Banquo and his children, is Macbeth actually hires two other people to do the deeds; This shows that Macbeth still hasn’t got the courage to kill people – he still fears doing it but what has changed is he came up with the idea, he wasn’t influenced or ressured by anybody; this shows that Macbeth is getting stronger, he thought about the murder but he still doesn’t face his wrong doings.
He gets two other people so he doesn’t feel the remorse and doesn’t have to live up to what he has done. The next killing in the play is actually by Macbeth; he decides he is going to act boldly so he kills Mcduffs family; By Macbeth actually going to kill Mcduffs family himself is a huge change from the beginning, before he couldn’t even bare to look at what he had done never mind thinking about it but throughout the play he grows courage and faces up to killing people. In the beginning Lady Macbeth was the strong courageous one in the relationship, now it has changed completely; Lady Macbeth killed herself – she was found trying to wash the blood of her hands and talks about the murders she and Macbeth committed. This shows that Lady Macbeth by killing herself wasn’t coping with the murders that she had planned and witnessed, in the beginning on the play she was so strong willed, you would of thought nothing would of got to her but this murder must have been in her head the whole time and the guilt of the whole situation took over and took her life and now Macbeth is the ‘strong one.At the ending of the last battle, Macbeth doesn’t back down he fights to the end whatever the circumstances, he believes he was born a hero and will forever hold that name to death. Macbeth in the start acted as a young boy; he didn’t want to hurt anyone the thoughts about hurting anyone killed him, he was very timid and easy to be bossed about and told what to do. By the end of the play he was a man, he stood up for what he did, he never stopped fighting until the end, the words ‘Are you a coward’ I personally think those words stayed with Macbeth forever.
