The first electric carriage was invented by Robert Anderson of Scotland estimated to be between the years 1832 to 1839. While this invention was properly recognized by few Americans, two American inventors improved the model and came up with the first non-rechargeable electric cells for their new model. As time passes other scientists improved and produced a better storage battery which gave way for the electric vehicles to become more popular. The year 1800s was also very significant years for France and Great Britain because they put recognition and encourage further development of electric vehicles.

After an electric tricycle was built by American inventors in 1895, they now focused their attention in building a more improved electric vehicle that will suit the transportation needs of the general public. Further innovation comes in succession and in 1899, a Belgian made electric powered racing car made a world speed record of 68 mph. This car was named “La Jamais Contente”. By the early 20th century, America was beginning to get industrialized and different cars using different energy source were already available in the market. These cars range from steam, electric, and gasoline versions.

Gasoline-fuelled cars were now beginning to be recognized. But the electric cars continued to be dominating the market until 1900s. It has outsold all other types of car in the American market. This is because electric vehicles have more advantages than its competitors. Electric cars do not produce vibration from its engine and does not have emission pipe thus reducing noises and smell unlike with gasoline powered cars. People are not used in using gasoline-fuelled vehicles because of the gears that need to be shifted every now and then.

Steam-powered cars had no shifting gears but then need long start-up times which can take 45 minutes especially in winter months. Aside from this, the steam cars have lesser travel range and need to have water for its cooling every now and then. The electric vehicle was considered user-friendly by the people because it does not require manual start-up and no need to wrestle with the gears although it has limited range because of its limited power supply. Charles Kettering has found the solution in permanently eliminating the hand crank for the gasoline-fueled vehicles when he invented the electric starter in 1912.

And in the 1920s further industrialization encourage societies to build better roads and inter-connect cities. This requires long range vehicles to be used but unfortunately electric vehicles were not built to travel long distances because they need battery replacement and recharging every now and then. There were only few available charging stations and that is very frustrating for the commuters. Fortunately, the discovery of the Texas crude oil has reduced the price of gasoline in the United States and ultimately gasoline cars became more popular.

The fading of popularity of the electric vehicles came in the mid 1930s. These cars that have become part of the commuting public continued to disappear and this became obvious in the 1960s. But by 1970s people began to feel the strain of the oil crisis and the price of crude oil in the local and foreign market are uncontrollably soaring higher brought about by industrialization. There is now the need for reinventing other vehicle alternatives using other energy source to lessen the dependency of foreign crude oil.

Environmental awareness programs also advocates reduction of exhaust emissions to avoid further environmental pollution. From there, some countries have began to innovate and revitalize the use of electric vehicles as the answer to these issues (Inventors). The dawning of the oil crisis has forced innovators to research further for the development of the electric vehicles as where they have left it. The goals to produce electric vehicles that are more reliable, powerful and can travel long distances are vigorously being pursued even by the world’s best automakers such as Ford.

Ford is one of America’s major carmakers that is strengthening the capability of the electric vehicles. It hopes to produce vehicles that are not dependent on gasoline and introduce to the market hybrid electric cars which are more efficient and cleaner. Electric cars are now one of the primary concerns of other countries but building them require more research and capability to handle faster charging and charging capability in numbers. But what are the real benefits in using electric powered cars.

Electric cars have no tailpipe emissions and air quality will greatly improve if there would be zero emission. Renewable source of energy particularly crude oil is showing signs of depletion and will not be readily available in the coming decades while electricity can be obtain from many sources such as from coal, natural gas, nuclear, wind and hydro which are almost available everywhere. Furthermore, EVs are quiet, more efficient and require minimal maintenance (Rewey) The good news is as of today, there are only very few hassles in charging electric vehicles as compared many years ago.

Fast charging has become the quickest method for recharging electric lift truck batteries that are used for long distance travels. This technology is more time efficient, minimize accidents unlike with gasoline and conserve space in warehouses and factories wherein gasoline stations require wider and individual spaces. Turning to fast charging technology requires almost no effort. For example, during shift changes, lunch or breaks, vehicles or even lift trucks are plugged in and will be re-charged in equal time.

Productivity and safety are improved because lesser time is spent as compared in the past wherein large and heavy truck batteries would have to be taken out to get charged in hours. Also, the reduction and elimination of battery compartments provide freer space for the driver. Fast charging technology was introduced by The Ford Motor Company in Michigan during its pilot study in 2000. Today, more than half of the Ford’s 40 North American plants were now converted with fast charging technology. This technology is more useful especially during the cold winter months because ordinary batteries also freeze with very low temperature. (Kempfer).
