He was an English soldier, explorer, colonial governor, author, and he is best known for his role in establishing the first permanent English colony in the New World.  His name was John Smith. ” This made the people of Jamestown begin to plant food, build shelters and make fences to protect themselves from attack. John Smith was the Captain of three shiploads of settlers who landed in Virginia and founded Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in the New World.  These settlers did not plant food and  build shelters. Smith eventually killed his master and escaped. He sailed back to England which took a few years. He made his way to Virginia where he and the three shiploads of settlers founded  Jamestown Virginia.
