You may have never thought one day you would wake up with stiff muscles, clumsiness, or impaired speech.
These are all symptoms of (MSA) Multiple system Atrophy. (MSA) is a disease very similar to Parkinson’s disease. The disease starts with symptoms then leads to causes and effects. According to Mayo Clinic authors of “Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.” “(MSA) is a rare, degenerative neurological disorder affecting your body’s involuntary functions, including blood pressure, breathing, bladder function and muscle control” (Mayo). (MSA) is very similar to Parkinson’s disease they share many similar symptoms, including stiff muscles, shaky balance, and slow movement (Mayo).
In the article “Prospective Differentiation of Multiple system Atrophy from Parkinson’s Disease, with and without Autonomic Failure”by Axel Lipp. “The change in autonomic symptoms was almost threefold greater in (MSA) than (PD) Parkinson’s Disease (Lipp). Some think (MSA) and Parkinson’s are the same thing, but they are actually just very similar (Lipp). There are many statistical differences in Parkinson’s and Multiple system Atrophy (Lipp). A series of people with Parkinson’s and (MSA) were tested and the age difference was greater in Parkinson’s (Lipp). The agent difference was apart by about five years (MSA) patients being younger (Lipp). The autonomic failure is a big part in both (MSA) and (PD) Parkinson’s disease (Lipp).
There is two patterns based on autonomic failure they include: severity, and distribution (Lipp). (MSA) usually worsens faster than Parkinson’s disease (National). (MSA) has a numerous amount of symptoms that vary (Mayo). These symptoms include: coordination problems, abnormal sweating, bathroom problems, Sleep problems, Sexual dysfunction, and emotional problems (Mayo).
The Coordination problems are not being able to speak correctly, vision problems, and bad balance (Mayo). The bathroom dysfunctions include: constipation, and not being able to use the restroom (Mayo). The Sweating problems are lack of sweat, and a rise of body temperature (Mayo).
The Sleep area includes just lack of sleep (Mayo). The sexual dysfunction lack of getting an erection and loss of lib (Mayo). Lastly, the emotional problems include: lack to control emotions (Mayo). Like many other diseases (MSA) doesn’t have a cause for why the disease occurs (Mayo). (MSA) can cause many problems to the brain (Mayo). These problems include, brain damage, shrinkage of the brain, and deterioration (Mayo). According to the authors National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of “Multiple System Atrophy Fact Sheet.” “(MSA) is a rare disease, affecting potentially 15,000 to 50,000 American, including men and women and all racial groups” (National).
When advancing in age at least starting in the 50s symptoms may appear (National). There is known cure for (MSA) as of today (Mayo).Treatment is the only solution for (MSA) (Mayo). Once you have (MSA) it doesn’t go away (Mayo). (MSA) progressively gets worse as your life goes on and ultimately leads to death (Mayo). (MSA) appears at a random time in old age, you will notice it appears when you witness the symptoms (National).
When (MSA) appears for the first time your lifespan can range from seven to ten years (Mayo). These are just statistics, but the rate of living can vary (Mayo). If patients do happen to pass away it most likely has to do with respiratory problems (Mayo). If you ever see signs of (MSA) it could be a very serious problem and a doctor will need to be seen (Mayo).
If (MSA) is already a problem for you and your symptoms are getting worse you also need to see a doctor. (MSA) is a common disease with no cause or reasoning (Mayo). If you get this disease you can experience many different symptoms (Mayo). This disease can be one of the worse and if you are diagnosed with it make sure if you have this disease to get treatment and care.
