Sigmund Freud discusses transference, that is, transfer, conversion and devolution from one state to another. Freud proposes that repression can be removed by moving what’s in unconscious into conscious. He defines repression as a precondition for the occurrence of symptoms. Repression occurs from those events that are still unconsciously embedded in our mind.
Repression creates fear and abnormal behavior. In order to move events from unconscious into our conscious it is imperative to get rid of repression. Repression is a barrier that hinders a person to realize those events consciously that are hidden in unconscious.Once a person comes out of the repression, the unconscious can move smoothly into conscious. The resistance offered to change the state must be discovered and resolved. When patient discovers the resistance and realizes it then he can easily move unconscious events into consciousness. Resistance is a part of ego. The patient who is too distressed for his present illness wants a way to come out of this condition.
He develops special interest in doctor as he’s the one who is helping the patient out from this condition. The patient develops good relations with doctors as doctor starts his treatment.However, this agreeable state cannot last for long as treatment involves complex procedures not liked by the patient. Gradually patient refrains from this behavior. Initially he shows too much affection and feelings towards the doctor.
However, when he encounters difficulties, pain and undesirable act during treatment he’s appalled. He wants to change his condition and relation. His initial feelings for doctor were not confirmed. There is no response from the doctor’s side and the environment in which he’s treated also did not confirm his feelings.As his feelings are not justified the patient now behaves as he has not made any agreement with the doctor and feels as if he’s not getting any proper treatment. It is a state during which patient develops a demand for love from the care giver or his doctor. He needs sympathy, affection, attention and care from all those who are around him and specifically the doctor treating him. Freud regards it as a “libidinal desire” that later turns into inseparable and non-sensual friendship.
