We have been working on the production ‘The Wiz’ I found this a hard three weeks because we have been through a lot of stress trying to make the production look amazing. My role in the performance was part of the onsomble, which is dancing and singing all the way through but does involve a bit of acting. At first I was disappointed with my part because I wanted more of an acting part, but then I found out that we would be involved in every dance and be on stage constantly. Learning each dance routine has been a lot of experience because I have learnt all different styles of dancing such as tap and ballet.I have done tap and ballet once before but it was only the basic steps, I learned a lot more during the lessons with Diane. Most of the routines were simple but looked really good on stage. I thought they were strange dances but looked interesting and different, but I like doing different routines because we usually done the same routines.
Each costume we had to wear during each movement piece, looked incredible because they didnt half go well with the movement piece. Each costume was designed brilliantly because they fitted each individual well and they were done properly. If the costumes weren’t done properly or didn’t fit they could fall down and cause a hazard which is important because its part of health and safety. If it weren’t for Stella and Becky we would have struggled a lot for getting costumes together, and they done an out standing job and so did a few others who helped out with costumes. My favourite costume was the tin man costume because it suited the dance type, and they looked wonderful on stage. They also blended in with Carl who was the main tin man, his character was brilliant because he was focused to what he had to do and he bonded with all the dancers who were in the song.In the dance we had to act like robots at first because we were all stiff but when the song kicked in we had to change and loosen up because that was the lyrics in the song.
I enjoyed this lot because it was a cheerful song and it made me smile and it made the audience smile to because I noticed the way the audience reacted. The onsomble were commented a lot on that dance routine because it was an interesting dance. Doing that dance in the matinee and the evening I felt improvement on my self, I thought in was able to do tap a lot more often.I also thought that the tin man costume looked one of the best because it was a hoola hoop skirt but stuck in one place, because it was meant to be like that.
During this dance I thought each individual looked amazing on stage because they all put a lot of energy into it, and every time onsomble done a dance we were commented and I felt privileged, it made me more happy and made me put even more energy into it. I can’t point out certain people in the onsomble because everyone who were in the onsomble looked brilliant. Each piece of movement looked brilliant when every one worked hard, and tried there best to perform. There was a lot of hassle though trying to finish and clean each dance because some people who were involved wouldn’t turn up or would be absent, so it was hard work finding new positions and when they would eventually turn up we would have to learn them what they didn’t no. I my opinion I think if someone weren’t in they shouldn’t participate in the dance or in any of the scenes because it saves a lot of hassle.
In the end we ended up not involving people who weren’t in which I thought was right, because I was absent for a dance piece and I weren’t involved in it.I was guttered though but it was my own fault. When some of the main characters would not turn up or was absent for a few days they did not get there part took of them but if it was onsomble they would which I thought was wrong, because it was not fair and its shows onsomble were more reliable and independent. We overcome this situation, by speaking to one another and everyone started to realise they need to get their act together because they will look stupid on the night and they will loose out on their parts. They then realised we didn’t have long to go for the show and I think they needed to realise this at first and we wouldn’t of had any problems. I noticed a lot of people who were determent to try their best on stage and was always eager to be the best they can, such as I thought both Dorothy’s Chloe and Amy were always on board, they were given notes but always took notice to what they were asked to improve.
I thought both there voices were amazing and they suited the part. I always enjoyed watching them, and there confidence has improved a lot on their singing.I thought al the friends Dorothy, tin man, lion and scarecrow all performed their best in rehearsals and the actual show days, but they put a lot more energy and enthusiastic into the show days. In one or two matinees I noticed they found it difficult to bond with the audience because there were a lot of children, because most of the children started to get bored because they didn’t understand the storyline and the main characters started to loose concentration to stop this from happening I think they needed to bring the audience in more make them understand the story, by telling them the story.Make them be astonished by the performance.
I still think they tried there best and I thought they put as much energy as possibly as they can. I enjoyed the scarecrows who were Jack, Kelly and Haley the most because they were hilarious, and they stood out a lot to me and they were liked the most by the audience. I also liked the way they had to be loose and unintelligent. I didn’t notice ant bad points or mistakes that they made either. There were several characters that stood out to me and I thought they were out standing, such as the lions and the tin man. The lions who were played by James and Serene they suited the part a lot because they both have strong voices and they both had their different ways of playing the characters. I think at first Serene wasn’t reliable because she was off a few times and she strolled in late and she needed to be in because she was a main character.
She then eventually got stuck into it and looked superb on stage.I thought Carl who was the tin man, and Thomas who was meant to be the other tin man would of stuck to it because I thought he was really good at the part because he had his own way of acting the part and I thought he was amusing, but he didn’t feel comfortable doing it and you cant force someone to do something they don’t want to so. On the other hand I thought Carl was brilliant because he stuck to it and he managed to cope with throughout each performance which is a lot of hard work to do for six shows but he pulled it off and he looked tremendous.Whilst practising each song I enjoyed it a lot because we learned different lyrics and I liked each song we did learn. At first I got frustrated because I couldn’t just stand there and sing for hours. When everyone was involved in a dance we had to sing as well as dance which everyone struggled to do because no one learned the lyrics and I think that if everyone did learn the lyrics they would be ok. We had a big problem with this because we were told that if we don’t sing the dance routine will be getting cut and everyone was guttered because we all loved participating to the dances.
So we all started to sing and made a big improvement, and the songs started to sound a lot better. Glinda who was played by Lauren and Emma was also one of my favourite characters because I loved the song she had to sing, it was a lovely song and I liked the sweet and innocent character and they played it brilliantly. The song they had to sing was then split up and given away to onsomble which I thought was unfair because the Glindas were only on stage for a few minutes, and onsomble are on stage throughout the production.I thought Lauren and Emma sung the song tremendous because they had a strong and sweet voice which explains Glindas character. I thought the song was then spoilt by individuals singing it, because it was much better when just Glinda had to sing it.
I thought that was awful when their song was split up and given away. There were several complaints then about that song getting ruined and they eventually sorted something out, so both Glindas got the chance to sing much more lines, but I still think onsomble shouldn’t have had any lines. There were a lot more characters who I enjoyed but the people who I have mentioned where my favourites and stood out a lot to me. No matter what problems we had throughout the rehearsals we managed to overcome them by discussing what we felt and what we thought and helping one another out. I loved taking part in this show and I think it’s the best show we have done and I would love to do it again one more time. Each night I thought went brilliant because everyone put their heart and soul into the performance and made the show be out standing.
