The first chapter talks about the meaning of a developmentally appropriate practice and how to achieve a practice of its sort.
This section also mentions concepts in the form of a list and how they came to be. One of the key points of this portion of the text is that the teacher needs to be aware of what each child can do. It is essential for a teacher to get to know a child so that they are conscious of what the sole child id doing and how they are advancing.
The second key point of this reading is that in addition to knowing the child the teacher also needs to become aware of the child’s family and interact with them to learn about their lives. With having knowledge of the child’s family and their home life can explain a lot about a child and with this the teacher can be courteous of the families’ dynamic. The final key point of this chapter is that teachers need to be aware of how they are teaching. This is important since the way of teaching can determine a child’s development.
The text also gives teachers information on how to be a beneficial educator, which I find helpful. Chapter two discusses more in depth of how to be an exceptional teacher. It also mentions how to look at overall view of developmentally appropriate practice. The initial key point of this chapter is that to be an outstanding teacher is that the teacher needs to be top-notch in every region of teaching. Meaning that to be a great educator you cannot slack in any area, you have to be at the top of your game. Also, that as a teacher you should not just utilize one type of tactic for teaching.
Seeing that kids are learning so many different pieces of information, one method is not going to work for all of the facts. Another point that I found to be key is that teachers should choose objectives and then evaluate the students. The teachers, students, and parents all have a need for a goal. Without an objective no one will know what the end point is and what the students will be learning.
Evaluation is also key, for young kids it varies in how they will be assessed but it help for everyone involved to see how the child has developed socially, physically, and emotionally. Lastly, the final point is that trying to teach in a developmentally appropriate way is elaborate and difficult. There are many questions that come with attempting to teach this way. It also comes with some obstacles to overcome.
My first impression of this book was that it is easy to read and I like how it is setup. I also enjoy the content on the inside. I found this full of information, and it was right there. It made you think about the facts but you did not have to interpret the text which I thoroughly enjoyed. This reading made me think about how much actually goes into being an exceptional teacher. Additionally, this text was interesting, it brought up pieces of information I had never thought about before.
I found that while reading these chapters that being involved in the students’ lives is important; just as important as teaching them facts, it is crucial that you are there for them. Overall, I found this reading educational and enjoyable.
