The mammal to be cloned from an adult

The year of 1997 had many different events that would be known for years to come. Some of these started off as experiments, and others happened coincidentally. Nonetheless, 1997 had many differing events, each of a significance to the world. Most of the events in this year will be remembered because of the mere doubts and impossibilities that became achievable in this year.

So, this year, the year of 1997, had many significant events occur that became known worldwide. One of the many events that occurred in 1997, a scientific breakthrough, happened to be the cloning of Dolly the Sheep. Dolly became part of experiments at The Roslin Institute; they hoped to try to produce genetically modified livestock. The scientists who conducted this experiment wanted to learn more about the way cells change when they develop and if a specialized cell could make an entirely new animal.

The lead professor of this experiment, Professor Sir Ian Wilmut, had a team of scientists, farm staff, vets, surgeons, and embryologists present to assist with the cloning process. Dolly’s mom, a Scottish Blackface, delivered Dolly on July 5th. Dolly had a white face, which showed the experiment worked because her face didn’t have any black on it, which would have shown genetic connection to her surrogate mom.

Dolly became the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell, which seemed impossible at the time. So, after gaining fame, Dolly remained at the Roslin Institute and had six lambs but sadly had to be euthanized later due to lung tumors (“The Life”) Another significant event, probably one of the most significant events in scientific analysis, that occurred in 1997 has been the landing of the Mars Pathfinder. It dropped the first successful rover, named Sojourner, on Mars. Pathfinder, created rather differently, used airbags, not rockets, to touch down on the surface of Mars. It dropped the rover to Mars’s surface from one hundred feet above ground, but the rover landed safely on a spot named Ares Vallis, an ancient flood plain that had plenty of rocks that could be used for analysis.

After some rocks were analyzed, scientists discovered Mars had evidence of a being a water-rich planet, and the plain Sojourner analyzed suggested it formed from flooding. This gave scientists more information about planets such as Mars (“Sojourner”) Finally, another strange, yet known worldwide event, occurred in Des Moines, Iowa. The world’s first surviving septuplets, born to Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey on November 19, 1997, ¬†were a surprise; although they were given the option of selective reduction, they refused and left the matter for God to decide. They already had a daughter, named Mikayla, who became a big sister when Bobbi delivered the septuplets nine weeks prematurely.

Kelsey, the lightest baby, weighed only two pounds and five ounces. The septuplets have been named Kenny Jr., Kelsey, Natalie, Brandon, Alexis, Nathan, and Joel. Two out of the seven, Alexis and Nathan, have cerebral palsy, a disease that affects movement, muscle tone, and/or posture.

Once Bobbi had the septuplets, life changed for the family; Bill Clinton personally called them with congratulations, and Oprah had them on her show; also, many people came forward to help and support Bobbi and Kenny, and the family received food, a new home, a van, diapers for the babies, and full scholarships for all the septuplets. So, the family had support from many different people (“Seven”) Many events in 1997, like the Mars Pathfinder or the cloning of Dolly the Sheep, had an impact on the world. Others, like the birth of septuplets, didn’t impact the world like other events, even though it gained fame because of its absurdness. Some of these events made contributions to scientific knowledge, and will forever be remembered, and others became labeled coincidences, but all of these events had their own significance. In conclusion, the year of 1997 had many significant events that became known worldwide.
