Songkran is the biggest festival in Thailand. Thai people celebrate Songkran Day as Thai New Year Day on April 13th-15th; the hottest month in the year. Songkran is the festival that developed in three important aspects: the origin of Songkran, a celebration as the New Year and the water festival. The origin of Songkran Festival is the way that Thai people began to celebrate in the past. The term Songkran has its origins in the Pali language of the Therevada Buddhist scripture. In Pali, the word Sankhara means a shift of the sun from one side of the Zodiac to the other.

Therefore, in this case it means the movement of the sun from Aries to Taurus. The next thing about the origin of Songkran is activities each day during April 13th-15th. The first day, people clean their houses and engage in preparations for the New Year festival. The people clean the bad things from the last year and ready for the new things that will be coming in the New Year. The second is the day that people prepare cooked meals and preserve food for the Buddhist merit-making activities on the next day. The last day begins with early morning merit-making at the temples, where the people offer preserved and cooked foods to the monks.

Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year in Thailand and in other countries. For example, Songkran Festival also has been celebrated in Burma, Cambodia and the Lao State too. It is believed to have been adapted from an Indian festival. The secondly, the date of the festival was originally set by astrological calculation, which is now fixed. Songkran falls in mid-April every year and has its origins base on the position of the sun. However, now Songkran is officially set of April 13th; the festival stretches over four days that are focus on different activities.

A celebration of Songkran have become to the water festival. First we should focus on a development of customs. The throwing of water originated as a way to pay respect to people, by using the “blessed” water to give good fortune to elders and family by gently pouring it on the shoulder. However it has become to play with water today. Next we focus on the water festival; when the most obvious celebration of Songkran is by the throwing of water. Lots of people roam the streets with containers of water or water guns, or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passers.

Besides the throwing of water; people who celebrating Songkran may also go to a temple to pray and give food to monks, the same way that Thai people did in the past.
