slavery in colonial America BY dres1017 Slavery took place in Colonial America in a complicated way. Around 1960 historians describe slavery in certain in a way, which leads them to think that there is differences between Whites and Blacks when it comes to intelligence, civilization, morality or physical capacity. All of the sudden White starting to think they should be the leader of people from Africa. They think that people from Africa should be the one doing all the hard work. Then the Civil right movement began in the 20th century, which lead historians to rethink about race and also, that African are Just as mart and capable of doing the things that White people are capable of doing.
Slavery then became racial slowly in colonial America, which means slavery were force labor and was not dealt with race. The thing is not all forced laborers were black and to be black did not mean they were enslaved. Most of the Africans in America were enslaved. From early moments in the history of slave traders came to Jamestown around 1690 and in Massachusetts by 1630.Slavery began to grow slowly from east to west until after the American Revolution, slavery was not well know in the south at this time. Many of the men In Jamestown was indentured servants they were brought to America to work without pay under a rich white person for many years before they could become free.
Indentured was over used during this time before slavery became well known. So for example the African that were brought to Jamestown in 1619 were not brought to be slave they were brought to be indentured servants. Some Africans were enslaved but they all had the same status as White indentured servants. White and black indentured servants were not treated very well. Just like African slaves, white servants received the same treatment. This typical labor lasted for several years for white and black. Most of them started to run away.
They used to pay people back then to find slaves that ran away. Most slaves started to see each other as equals so they tried to come together to change the way they were treated. This happen during Bacon’s Rebellion that took place around 1676.Nathanael Bacon was a rich man that was born in Virginia who made Virginia Government his friends so that he could kill Native Americans and also Indians. He was told to kill Native Americans and Indians only if they were enemies.
Nathanael Bacon in the other hand wanted lands from the Indians and also wanted to kill the Native Americans whether or not they were enemies. Many people in Virginia supported Nathanael Bacon decision of killing Indians for their lands, because they did not have their own lands. Most of the people in Virginia that did not own a land were indentured servants or they were forced to work.
Bacons Rebellion did not succeed because the military put a stop to it, and Nathanael Bacon died constipation. After Bacons Rebellion black and white people started to protest against the Virginia Government. After all this happened they made bond to keep the race separate.
The bond says that even is a person from Africa had a child the child will be slave too, and if you were a white indentured servants their work was done and they were set to go free.Virginia was trying to put Africans down. They started to make indentured servants more as an advertisement so they could have more workers. Slaves that were shipped form Africa were sent to South America or to the Caribbean.
They were and sugar. Slaves were used mainly to make money so that they can pay the cost to transport people back to the colonies. Around the 18th century the court started changing the rules between black and whites. This means that slavery should be apply mainly to Black Africans, and from time to time to Native Americans. In 1705 the constitution passed out a law which says that slavery should be applied to people from other nations that’s are not Christian. They passed out this law because of the success of tobacco as a cash crop in the Southern colonies.
The lack of workers gave planters the idea to import more slaves for labor by the end of the 17th century. The South had large amount of slaves and proportion of slaves in the population. Religious differences put together to a geographic and also a lack of equality as well. From 1654 t01865, slavery was legal between most states in United States. Most slaves were black and were controlled by White owners, some owners were brutal they work their slaves mercilessly. They only care about themselves and how to improve their business. Slaves had no rights because there was laws passed that prohibit them from owning their own property or firearms, participating in lawsuits, and possessing alcohol. They developed their own culture unknown to their owners.
They created their own ways of speaking. Slaves families suffered as owners move different members from their family from one destination to another. Most of the slave during that time was tired of the unfair treatment they received from their owners. They felt like everyone was created equal and deserve to be free, so they decided to start runway from their owners. Many use the under ground rail roads to escape but only few where able to make it because some of the slave were caught and were sent back to their owners. Even though some Native Americans and some free Blacks own slaves, there were a small amount of white slaves as well. Europeans lso had some Native Americans as slaves, and African Native Americans.
Slavery quickly spread out. The majority of slave holding was in the southern, where most slaves participated in making a machine that was going to help develop more crops and things like that. Around 1860 nearly four million slaves were captured in a total population of Just over 12 million in the 15 states in which slavery was legal. United States became wealthy during the first half of the 19th century. It was greatly improved by the labor of African Americans.
After the Civil War Lincoln made a law called the Emancipation proclamation. It was made to put an end to slavery. Also after United States won the American Civil War slave labor was starting to reduce it effectiveness in the South. This help destroy the economy in the south, but the reduction of slavery in the south affected the price of cotton, which was valuable back then. That made it hard for some regions to recover from wars.
It also contributes to the lack of organization, which kept products from markets. The South faced major competition from cotton producers such as Egypt and India.Industries in the North Grew rapidly during and after the war, which mean that the South had a long way to o if they were trying to catch up to the North when it come to Agriculture economy. Industrialists from northeastern states were ready total control many part of the nations, including social and some part when it comes to political affairs. Planters in the South started loosing power.
Economy grew rapidly during the Civil War it increase the modern United State industrial economy. Twelve million Slaves were brought to the United States. The largest amount of Slaves was shipped to Brazil. The amount of imported slaves increases the United State Population significantly. These put big differences on freedom, and it expand the development in slavery. In European some countries where abolitionism was rapidly gaining popularity especially to the North where abolitionists were slowly gaining traction, to the South where slavery as an institution was becoming more solid, South America and the West Indies, islands where African slaves had become the absolute standard were highly significant when it comes to social problems.
orldwide transition of economic functioning, political thought, the revolutionary and thoughts of liberties and reedom, colonial eighteenth century America was the representative of numerous cultures, ethnicities, places of origin, religions, social economic statuses, and problems that produced varying perspectives of freedom and slavery, both of which grew and developed throughout the world. Even though slavery was not the north that started the whole thing, people from the south had a different way of viewing things. Most of their politicians were able to give reason on why slavery will never end.Everything thing was good, economy was on first place and also religious and cultural arguments.
People back then used to think that slavery was adopted by god as a way of making people know things that they didn’t all ready know how to do. People that supported slavery also used to compare the behavior between north and south. It was called the free labor argument especial in the north. By the 1760’s many Americans were beginning to become dissatisfied with their mother nation and were waging a war of resistance against the British colonial government. The words of freedom of the rebelling colonists soon also became the same cry for the slaves’ fight for their own freedom. Many of their literatures used the rhetoric of the times to appeal for the abolition of slavery.
It was paradoxical for the patriots to be fighting for their freedom from Britain and at the same to be accepting slavery, that which strips the very freedom of a man. In 1776 representatives from the rebellious thirteen colonies met in the Continental Congress and voted on ceasing slave trade but solely for the purpose of shutting down British trade.Shortly after, Thomas Jefferson wrote his first version of the Declaration of Independence in which he indicted King George for promoting slavery in America. The Declaration of Independence became renown as the document that celebrated human rights and personal freedom, and yet at the time when Jefferson wrote it, he himself owned over 200 slaves. Many Americans during this time period came to forget that they were of the same human species as their slaves. Freedom was an issue that pertained to humans, not human chattel.
Abolitionist movements slowly but surely became more widespread in their fght for the emancipation of slaves. With the conflict of the Missouri Compromise in 1820 (the issue of whether or not to accept a slave state into the United States of America), Congressional elections of that year were quite affected as terms such as “anti- slavery” and “pro-slavery” were substituting Federalist and Republican. Slavery was a major pillar in America and it was not easy to simply erase something that existed in a significant portion of the nation’s history. It took a war to bring slavery to an end.Slavery was officially abolished in America by President Lincoln’s approval of the thirteenth amendment in 1865. From my own point of view I think that slavery is bad through hard labor while chain up, I also think that slavery is bad because of the ransportation of slaves across the Atlantic par of the world, it is also bad because the were packed and many Africans died, slaves where always treated cruelly, slaves were forced to work for hours and they made them live in terrible conditions and made them work terrible weather conditions that could make people sick.I also think that slavery is bad because during the slaves period slaves masters sold slaves in term of getting more money, slavery can also be bad because slaves masters enslave people for years in a bad and harmful way because the don t want do something that could be helpful to the society and the community.
