Same Sex Marriage

Same Sex Marriage BY haylee2024 The Census Bureau found, from the 2010 census, the number of same sex couples is a national total of about This means 902,000 happy couples. Just because people are the same gender, does not mean their marriage should be illegal. The government cannot prevent people of the same sex from falling in love. Same sex marriage should be legalized universally in the United States. Gay marriage could potentially lead down a “slippery slope” ending with giving people in polygamous, incestuous, bestial, and other nontraditional relationships the ight to marry (2).

There is no such thing as traditional marriage. Given the prevalence of modern and ancient examples of family arrangements based on polygamy, communal child-rearing, the use of concubines and mistresses and the commonality of prostitution, heterosexual monogamy can be considered “unnatural” in evolutionary terms(3). This argument is using the “slippery-slope” and “faulty casualty’ fallacy.

Meaning it described the argument by portraying todays tiny misstep as tomorrows slide into disaster and that because one event occurs then nother follows.Marriage should not be extended to same-sex couples because homosexual relationships have nothing to do with procreation. Allowing gay marriage would only further shift the purpose of marriage from producing and raising children to adult gratification (4). The definition of procreation is reproduction (5). It doesn’t matter how the couples have children, for the fact that they can raise and care for the child as their own and handle the challenges of life as a family.Artificial insemination for emale couples and a surrogate mom for male couples are options granting same sex marriage participants an avenue for having a family. This argument is weak because there actually are ways for same sex couples to have children.

They may not be natural, but they still count as reproduction. “The fact is that [it] is not a choice to be black, but it is a choice – I know you don’t like this, but it is obviously a choice to be homosexual. ” – Representative Bob Inglis (6) Being homosexual is not a choice for some humans, most are born into homosexuality.Humans are either attracted to the same sex or not. Humans can choose to be homosexual, but cannot choose not to be because you can not run away from what you love. This argument is weak because Inglis compared same sex marriage with being African American by using the “faulty analogy’ fallacy.

If not being homosexual is a choice, according to Inglis, then being African American is. Allowing same-sex couples to marry will give them access to basic rights such as hospital visitation during an illness, taxation and inheritance rights, access to family ealth coverage, and protection in the event of the relationship ending (7).An Oct. 2, 2009 analysis by the New York Times estimates that a same-sex couple denied marriage benefits will incur an additional $41 , 196 to $467,562 in expenses over their financial gain to state and local governments. Revenue from gay marriage comes from marriage licenses, higher income taxes (the so-called “marriage penalty”), and decreases in costs for state benefit program (9). The Comptroller for New York City found that legalizing gay marriage would bring $142 million to the Citys economy nd $184 million to the State’s economy over three years (10).Resources 1. “Do We Really Want to Redefine Marriage,” www.
