The teacher’s responsibility is to attend organisational events. These are informal meetings, where the learners may be given advised on the relevant courses to suit their qualification and needs . The teacher may also ask the student to attend a formal intererview. This may involve a skills test which could identify areas of weakness, either numeracy or literacy. The purpose of this is not to exclude students, but to offer support where nesaccary. Planning the Teaching Session

The role of the teacher is to decide what is required to enable teaching to take place. Their responsibility is to follow a syllabus from an awarding body or from a non accredited programme, both of these a workbook will be provided . This will give guidelines on the courses. The teacher is also responsible for producing a scheme of work. The frame work for this may include the following, who will attend the session, aims and objective, activities required and resources needed. Facilitating The next stage is facilitating, or enables learning.

The teacher’s role is to, communicates appropriately, conforms to a code of conduct, establish grounds rules, maintain a duty of care, and teach in a way that is inclusive and engaging using a variety of teaching methods. The teacher’s responsibility is to communicate effectively. This can be achieved through several methods. Oral, Written, and non-verbal which is body lanquage. All teachers must follow a Code of Professional Practise. This is based on seven behaviours . Professional integrity, respect, reasonable care, professional practise, criminal offence disclosure, and responsibility during any investigations.

The organisation which employs the teacher may have a similar a code of conduct, which will cover similar behaviours, including health and safety requirement and disciplinary procedures. The teacher must also set ground rules; these may include deal with eating and drinking within the classroom, and respecting others views and beliefs. Further responsibilities will be providing a safe working environment; this will be complying with health and safety guidelines. To enable learning the teacher may choose several methods to encourage learning.

Pedagogy teaching is often the formal approach to learning; this may include the teacher giving, lectures, demonstration, and presentations. This style is often seen as the traditional teaching approach, where the learner has limited involvement. The other teaching method is called andragogical. Here the student is at the centre of any learning. With the use of open questions during any session the student becomes more actively involved and therefore takes ownership of their learning. This method is often referred to as coaching Assessing Here the role is to assess what learning is taking place.

The teacher’s responsibility is to assess any barriers the student may have to learning, this may be known at the beginning of the course, or understood during, the teacher may then offer any support where required. As the awarding body will require the teacher to assess the student’s level of learning, the teacher will still need to decide what methods of assessment are required. This may be observation during any session, and completing assignments. It is important when any assessment has been made the teacher must give the student feedback. Finally the teacher needs to review any assessment and make any changes where necessary.

It is important that the teacher maintains a record of student progress as this may be a requirement of the organisation. Evaluating The final role is evaluating and assuring the quality of the teaching programme. . From start to finish the teacher has a responsibility to evaluate their teaching . During the design of the scheme of work, the teacher will have to review the session and ask what when well, or not, how can I improve the next session. It is important to remember the organisation or awarding body will require further evidence that evaluation and quality assurance has taken place.

The purpose of this is to provide consistency and quality across any teaching session. This may be linked to performance targets for the college. Evaluating teaching and teachers can be done by several methods . Internal monitoring; this may be another member of staff, the teacher may be required to undertake this as their role, external assessment, which may be an independent monitoring body. These may be a mandatory requirement of the college. Feedback from the students will also assess your performance, these methods may include, surveys, questionnaires, reviews, appraisals, and informal meetings with the students.

Boundaries within teaching can be defined as both professional and personal. Professional boundaries can be defined within the teacher’s code of conduct. These are a set of rules outlining the responsibilities, or proper practices of the teacher . Personal boundaries are also a set of rules that the teacher, or student, may create to identify themselves . These rules may be based on, principles, values, and standards. Both these tell the individual what they will do, must do, what they like and do not, also how close someone can get to them.

If the teacher fails to understand the professional boundaries ,this may result in, violation of their position of trust, abuse of power within the teacher/student relationship and the teacher using that relationship to meet their own needs ,not that of the students. An example of these are ,the teacher becoming personally involved ,including seeing a student in a non college environment, the student receiving money or gifts, the teacher must not give one student undue attention over other and sharing information with a third party.

All these are in breach of professional boundaries. As a teacher it is important to protect yourself, the way to do this includes, awareness of the law and your liability as a teacher, complymenting a student without contact, letting students know when overstepping professional boundaries and having input from colleagues if unsure of your actions. The reason for boundaries are to help the student learn but in the correct place, time and activity. Conclusion The fundamental role of the teacher is to enable learning.
