Question1 Watson is anincredibly powerful computer, as evidenced by its ability to outperform two ofits key rivals Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings during a competition. It does so byusing a natural language system which interprets and breaks down the meaning ofthe information grammatically, relationally and structurally. Watsonutilizes a set of hardware and software to answer most questions used by humanbeings during various occasions. The technology used comprises of both hardwareand software. The software part comprises of databases to store information,Deep QA technology, machine-learning technologies, knowledge presentation, information retrieval and natural language processing technologies. Consistingof 2880 processor cores, 15 terabytes of RAM, a Linux operating system and tenranks of IBM servers, specifically IBM power 750 servers. Watson needs suchpowerful hardware and software to help perform thousands of computations anddatabase searches within a short period, to get information stored in itsdatabase, or from the internet sources.
Question 2 As per now, theintelligence of Watson can only be rivaled by human beings, and not by othersimilar systems. Despite having various flaws, it can perform a wide range ofactivities and superior from other systems. For instance, Watson can processnatural language. Watson is also able to use a set of preprogrammed algorithmsto evaluate languages used in different contexts, gather information aboutplaces, and influential people and generate several solutions. If in any case,a certain algorithm can solve a question, Watson keeps it in its memory andutilizes it for future searches. This move enables Watson to improve its functioningwith time by using information stored in its database, and internet sources.Watson, however, is unable to perform various activities among them to predictthe future of a person or event and does not have an ability to have anintelligent conversation with human. It also lacks the intentions, objectivesor feelings of being itself, as opposed to humans who have these features.
Question3 Watson can solve a wide range of problemsinvolving questions and answers. Through the use of preprogrammed algorithms,it performs searches in its database and the internet and generates a widerange of possible solutions to this question. This application will be crucialin helping professional gather data from various sources and use it to betterservice delivery. Doctors and physicians will find Watson essential for theirjobs as it will help them streamline operations in healthcare firms, and reduceerrors in diagnosis. Watson will also be helpful during online transactionsthat involve questions and answer sessions, as well as interviewing candidatesfor a particular job. Due to its vast memory storage, it will be helpful tofuture professionals as they will be able to use the knowledge accumulated inits database for a long time.
For instance, banks and other financialinstitutions can utilize it to identify consumer patterns and to improve theconsumer experience.Question4Personally, I believethat the performance of Watson will be outstanding and it will be helpful to alot of people globally. As IBM hopes, Watson will be useful in various fieldsof life and will gain more clients with time. One area which I believe futureWatson applications will be helpful is in the field of job interviews andonline transactions involving questions and answers. However, not all peoplewill benefit from this advancement.
Use of this application will render mostpeople jobless as it will be able to perform most of the jobs currently beingconducted by human beings. However, Watson will help individuals and firmsstreamline operations and increase efficiency. Use of Watson in other sectorssuch as finance and health, the ability to sift through and deeply analyse allthe information and deliver it as needed basis can really be dramatic.According to Adam Gabbatt (2011), “The latest challenge shows that IBM whichturns 100 this year wants to stay at the forefront of the informationtechnology industry, despite apparently being usurped by companies such asGoogle and Apple.”
