Quantitative data mainly shows a numerical form of data, which can be put into different types of categories. This form of data giveshard facts and mainly consists of “yes” and “no” answers which can be used toconstruct graphs and tables of raw data. Quantitative research method alsoconsists of a survey-based form forexample “a rating scale or closed questions on a questionnaire wouldgenerate quantitative data as these produce either numerical data or data thatcan be put into categories (e.
g., “yes,” “no” answers)” (McLeod , 2008, 2017)Benefits of using this kind of data could/would include hardfacts which will limit the amount of the participant reaction to expressappropriate social behaviour, the data will give more of a numerical data whichis less open to ambiguities of interpretation for example “Quantitative data can be interpreted with statisticalanalysis, and since statistics are based on the principles of mathematics, thequantitative approach is viewed as scientifically objective, and rational”(Denscombe, 2010)But that’s not to say qualitative data is out of thequestion. What this document is going to tackle does ask for a quantitativeresponse but it also asks for aqualitative to give a more human approachresponse when talking about depression and anxiety which can’t be given from just qualitative data alone.
“Qualitative research is multimethod in focus, involving aninterpretive, naturalistic approach to its subject matter. This means thatqualitative researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting tomake sense of, or interpret, phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring tothem.” (Denzin & Lincoln, 1994)That’s why it’s good to get some qualitative data withinthis document, for participants who take part in a survey can express how theydeal with anxiety and depression on a day to day basis with the comfort ofvideo games could give more of a personal response to the survey.
while mixed method approach will prove useful throughoutthis documentation, quantitative data will prove more useful due to the easywhen creating a survey but that doesn’t mean qualitative data won’t be used asheavily as quantitative data.
