I would like to work at a local social service agency. Social services perform a lot of tasks for a lot of people. An ethical leader has to set the tone for the whole organization. Through components as such as communication, quality, collaboration, succession planning, and tenure an organizations ethical standards are in place (Work Force Management, 2003). With the standards set by the leader of an organization the same will be required of its subordinates.
Social services is an agency that helps meet the vital needs a community without an ethical leader in place there could be an opportunity for an “immoral use of tremendous power (Ethical Communication, para. 1). ” As the director of social services I would have a great deal of responsibilities. My first responsibility would be to the people in need. To not only do o further harm, but to help make things better for them. As a leader I would need to employ people and train them with the common mission of helping people reach their goals and their needs as much as our agency will allow (National Organization for Human Services, 1996).
To protect the privacy, dignity, and integrity of all we serve by helping them meet their basic daily needs (National Organization for Human Services, 1996). As a leader I would also have a responsibility to the community. I would need to be aware of current and changing laws and social policies as they would affect those whom I serve (National Organization for Human Services, 1996). Human service professionals recognize unmet needs especially of the underprivileged and or minority populations who are at risk for being underserved.
I would also need to be aware of my own cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values, and how it pertains to my job as human service professional. Lastly I would have a responsibility as colleague and employer. As a professional I would need to establish and help maintain highly ethical and efficient client services (National Organization for Human Services, 1996). Being a professional would also entail open communication with other professionals on behalf of clients (National Organization for Human Services, 1996).
Human service professionals also have the responsibility to mediate and or resolve conflicts among employees and employee client conflict (National Organization for Human Services, 1996). As a human service professional there are some values that I would adhere to. These values would guide me as a service provider, a colleague, and a leader. I would like to lead an environment where people in need can come get the assistance they need to grow to be productive members of society (Keystone Human Services, 2007).
To recognize and fight for social justice and the needs of the under privileged (Keystone Human Services, 2007). To recognize and respect the diversity of the community and the populations we serve (Keystone Human Services, 2007). To create an atmosphere and level of trust where all people are respected and valued equally (Keystone Human Services, 2007). As a leader I would direct a team culturally sensitive, divers, and aware. Adhering to these values would guide me through role as director of social services.
As a human service professional I hope to achieve change. One life one family at a time. I have a value system that guides me that I intend to utilize to promote change. I treat people the way I want to be treated. I try to be an honest, trustworthy, and dependable person. I try to keep parameters set on all nonpersonal relationships. Those things are important in the human service profession. The NASW (National Association of Social Workers) has listed a set of core values to guide those in the human service profession.
Service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence are the foundation of values that would help guide me as a human service professional ((Preamble, para 3. ). I hope to be the type of human service professional that can instill trust and promote change. I hope that I can help someone in tough situation get the tools to help themselves out of the situation, and on to better their lives. As a human service worker temporary solutions are just stepping stones to bettering people’s lives. I want to help create and facilitate those stones for as many lives as I can.
