Nahomy BardalesMs.Alba Romeo and Juliet 15 January 2018Convenient Deaths Romeo and Juliet play is about to lovers whose death leads to the ending of two families dispute. This lovers aren’t supposed to stay together since they are destined to be star-crossed lovers, but the fact that they are star-crossed lovers helps the families end the long argument The actions taken in the play are all enforced by destiny, each characters have their life planned, some of them die soon but all the death in the lay are for the greater good. In the play William Shakespeare starts of by placing the voice of destiny and we know that god knows our destiny and because of a priest all this things are happening, following from that there is foreshadowing throughout the play, he shows us clearly that there is indeed a greater force acting upon Romeo and Juliet although they try to reverse it their path it their path you can’t jump to the other side. Friar Laurence’s a priest or man of God, he guides Romeo and Juliet through the course of their destiny.
God is the one that has planned our path and he uses one of his followers Friar Laurence, to help Romeo and Juliet complete their path. Friar Laurence is aware Romeo and Juliet will end up in a tragedy, since he is; still, a man he makes mistakes. When Romeo goes to Friar Laurence and asked him to marry him to Juliet Friar Laurence response is “Oh, she knew well/Thy love did read by rote, that could not spell./But come, young waverer, come, go with me,/In one respect I’ll thy assistant be,/For this alliance may so happy prove/To turn your households’ rancor to pure remedy” (4.1, Line-71)., Friar knows this love isn’t real, but he decides to marry them for the greater good of their families. Destiny had planned that the family dispute will be over, Friar Laurence makes mistakes from the reader’s point of view but this what’s needed to happen.
Another example where Friar Laurence tries to help is when he tells Juliet “If, rather than to marry County Paris, /Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, /Then is it likely thou wilt undertake /A thing like death to chide away this shame, /That copest with death himself to scape from it; /And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee love” (2.3,Line-87), Friar stops Juliet from killing herself and gives her an idea. This idea leaves Romeo’s death upon Friar Laurence hands. After all, Friar makes mistakes he is just one thing that brightens the path destiny has planned. In the play, William Shakespeare gives the characters feelings, this feelings are foreshadowing the course of their destiny, the characters don’t believe what they feel and if they do they try to reverse what’s going to happen. When Romeo refuses to go to the party but then says “I fear too early, for my mind misgives/Some consequence yet hanging in the stars/Shall bitterly begin his fearful date/With this night’s revels, and expire the term/Of a despisèd life closed in my breast/By some vile forfeit of untimely death./But he that hath the steerage of my course,/Direct my sail.
On, lusty gentlemen.”(1.4,Line-107), he gets a feeling that from this day on destiny has something bad planned for him,but he then says well it’s not like he could stop it so he goes to the party. Then Juliet saying goodbye to Romeo says “O God, I have an ill-divining soul!Methinks I see thee, now thou art below,As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.Either my eyesight fails, or thou look’st pale”(3.5,Line-54), she is seeing Romeo dead and lets him leave instead of asking him to stay, Juliet and Romeo don’t believe in destiny and destiny is giving them signs.
When Romeo says “Is it e’en so? Then I defy you, stars!/Thou know’st my lodging. Get me ink and paper,/And hire post horses. I will hence tonight.”(5.1 Line-24)he tries to go left instead of right but the course destiny wasn’t change it was actually followed perfectly.
Throughout the play William Shakespeare shows us that when there is plan you can’t really change the outcome, Romeo and Juliet try to challenge faith, they think they are in control but then again they blame everything on faith this is blocking them from seeing that the road is about to end. When Romeo says “O, I am fortune’s fool!”(3.1,Line-98), he starts of by blaming all the bad things of faith and on the stars and says he’s just a fool that is being used for the greater good, but then as a said before he challenges the stars say ” Then I defy you stars!”(5.
1,Line-24). Juliet then thinks that faith left her when romeo left “..My husband is on earth, my faith in heaven./How shall that faith return again to earth,/Unless that husband send it me from heaven/By leaving earth? Comfort me. Counsel me.”(3.
5,Line-205), Juliet pictures Romeo dead and taught faith left her when Romeo left, she thinks faith isn’t there but then says but if faith wants me to be with romeo then he’ll come back. Romeo and Juliet haven’t decided if they believe in faith, they blame faith, and they are right to blame faith because, if they had free will then they could have stop their death from happening. At the end of the day, the characters found out that they couldn’t change their life course. Faith called Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers because they weren’t destin to be together forever, their death and other characters death like Tybalt, lifted the fight between the Capulets and Montagues. William Shakespeare gives his audience so much foreshadowing that their is a bigger force impulsing the characters to do certain things.
He also gave us, at the beginning what dentiny had planned and all the things that he told his audience happened exactly as planned, from their we know that this wasn’t them making their own decisions whatever they would do they will end up dead. Being in love wasn’t the cause of their death, a fight that will end with their death, killed Romeo and Juliet.
