In this task I will evaluate the effectiveness of how multidisciplinary work for patients, I will state what the multidisciplinary and it’s strengths and weaknesses. I will also looking look at a MDT who work within the health and social care setting and state how this MDT is helping its patients. Multi-agency working is the bringing together of different professionals who work together, providing their own service and sharing their information.
There are many benefits of multi-agency working which includes: information sharing; sharing of skills, knowledge and expertise; the fostering of shared decision-making, shared ownership and shared responsibility particularly in drawing up joint procedures and strategies. Strengths and weakness of multidisciplinary for service users Now I will talk about what I think are the weakness and strength of the multidisciplinary team MDT.
One strength of multidisciplinary for the service users is that they get to have the best health care services as they have professionals from various backgrounds working with them. Having different professionals who are there to work and share information together until their patients are in better health is a very good benefit for service users. However this can also be a weakness as sometimes service users do not want their information being passed around or shared, this can sometimes be a barrier for the multidisciplinary team.
Another multidisciplinary strength is all ideas and decisions about the treatment plans for the patients are discussed between every member of the team before any decision is made also the MDT include the patients in that discussion also. E. g. a doctor may make a suggestion that is harmful to the service user occupations needs, this suggestion will be discuss with other member of the team and one of the team member will deflect this suggestion as they already information and they know that this suggestion can not be made because it could cause harm to the service user.
This information sharing, meeting discussions is really good because if MDT’s didn’t meet or didn’t have any kind of discussing between them while they are working together, a great amount of harm can be caused. Another thing that I consider MDT strength is that since they work together as team which means that more than one person in involved, minimal information such medications patients can ad cannot have or what they are allergic to cannot be missed. This really does benefit the service users as this show everyone is praying close attention to information’s they are being given about the patients.
Another MDT strength is that since information are being shared; the patients healthcare will never stop when the doctor in charge for that patient is not there. In other words just because a member of the MD is not here the patient care would not stop because other MD members would still have access to that patient file and they can continue doing their work. Even though in my opinion there isn’t really a weakness to multidisciplinary especially to patients since they are getting taken care off by multiples professionals and that isn’t something that can be written as negative or weak.
However just like any working teams they are some tensions especially when a lot of people are working together. Sometime people get jealous because a team member may have more responsibility then another or another would be given a better job to do than other, and things like can really cause tension. Which can really affect their jobs since they are getting distracted by that tension instead of doing what they are suppose to and that is taking care of their patients as a well hard working team and not rivals.
Also sometimes when they are a lot of people working together and when a decisions is suggested, everyone opinions are counted and it is likely that it will take time before a decisions is made, and patients will have to wait for a decision to be made before the MDT can continue with their work so this means that patients won’t receive any care of their care during that debate. The MD cancer team The teenage and young adult multi-disciplinary team (MDT) is made up of professionals who are expert in diagnosing, treating and caring for young people with cancer.
These teams are based at teenage and young adult cancer units. The team work together to coordinate the patient’s care and support, wherever a young person is having their cancer treatment. How patients are helped This care unit is especially for teenagers and young adults, they help their patients in many different ways as every member of team profession is related to children somehow. They are there to guide their patients through every step of their illness by helping them with medications, chemotherapy and by offering them the support they and their families can have.
A strength that comes out of the multidisciplinary cancer team is that since this team is made out of some many different professionals, the patients can get immediate help if there is something wrong. E. g. if a young teen has just been signed to the care unit, their feeling will be all over the place since they will be very overwhelmed, they can go and talk to the psychologist or the social worker of the care unit, but in cases like this psychologist are more recommended as they can help patient to deal with their emotions, however patients can decide whom they would like to talk to.
This will only show the patients that they can talk to people and they are people who are they to support them and their families, because they will be members of families who would also want support because they are feeling overwhelmed by what’s happening to their siblings, daughter, son or whoever that patient is to them. Another strength is that patients won’t have or need to meet the whole MD cancer team, since every patients that attends the care unit has a different cancer they all won’t be needing the same people.
Also meeting a whole team of professionals can be very overwhelming especially for in cases like this and also it will be very hard for the patients and some members of the team to really connect and develop and trusting relationships. I think it would be easy if patients only meet the people they would really be working with, this way they will be able to really see who is who and who will be doing what, I think that this way relationship can be formed.
However they is also the issue that some patient’s may feel comfortable working with some team members if they ever happens they have the rights to ask for another person which they feel comfortable with. Multidisciplinary prevention and early intervention team Prevention and early intervention means services that work with children and their families identifying and addressing needs at an early stage to prevent the difficulties that they can experience from arising. It aims to ensure that children and young people receive the right support at the right time, so that problems are addressed well before things reach ‘crisis point’.
How children are helped The prevention and early intervention really help children, schools and families in many positive ways, they have teacher and support teachers who are there to help the children with difficulties. Of course tests are done so that the team knows what kind of difficulties they will be dealing with and then from there each members of team will be assign a child of their expertise. They will be helping the children progress slowly from their difficulties by encouraging them and helping them develop useful skills.
One strength is that the education board who is behind this is realising that children can be helped from a very early age and that if they are helped from a very early age they chances of struggling after are less. Also by putting a whole member of team together like to work with children is a very good as member of team can help the child to achieve something from their expertise, it will also give the children a chances to develop skills because they are given many different professionals to work with.
Another strength is that the children with difficulties are more likely to out grow what ever difficulties they were having as children because of all the help they were getting when they were young. It will also permit them to have more opportunities in life to be able to do what they want instead of worrying of being unable to achieve because the difficulties that are experimenting.
It will also give them to chance to go to school like very children but still have the help that they need if the MDT feel like they are quiet ready to be able to go on their own yet. Even though some may that all this is unnecessary some are grateful for the help. Overall I think that the MDT is a very good thing, I think that having many professionals from different expertise working together to help someone is really a good idea that should develop more so that everyone can apply to it.
Also having different people working to together on a patients makes that the patient will have the best treatment possible as all arguments, decisions and opinions are taken very seriously, after all these people are there to make sure that the patient is getting the best possible care. I think that when you have many people working there finally a solution is easier and faster than it would be if a person was working by them self. MDT is the possible solution to our health treatments for the future and I am all for it.
