Muhammad Tahir, who attained
the designation of ‘Inayat Khan, and was gracefully first name ‘Ashna, he was
son of Zafar Khan as well as grandson of Khwaja Abu Hassan. Zafar Khan, the writer’s
predecessor, was a wazir of Jahangir. In the period in power of Shah Jahan, he was
single time ruler of Kabul, and next of Kashmir, throughout which later
government he achieved the profession of Tibet chronicled in the book. At a
later era he was designated in the administration of Thatta.

“He was celebrated as a poet, as a patron of letters,
and as a just and moderate ruler.” 1

Inayat Khan’s parental
grandfather, Saif Khan, was governor of Agra, and after Prince Shuja was selected
ruler of Bengal, Saif Khan was sent thither to accomplish the administration
until the approaching of the prince. The writer was born in the period in which
Shah Jahan came to the sovereignty. In the seventh year of his stage he acknowledged,
as he notifies us, ‘a suitable mansab’.
He was sent to bond with his father in Kashmir while he was ruler there. He was
later engaged in the Imperial Library. He distinctive his father’s capabilities
and fine abilities. He was one of the close associates of Shah Jahan. Recently
he retired from and stayed in Kashmir, where he expired in 1666 AD. In accumulation
to the antiquity of Shah Jahan’s reign, he was author of a Diwan along with
three Malawi. His well-known graft is recognized to be Shah Jahan Nama. The
sources of the first part of this Shah Jahan Nama are evidently recognized by
the author. The first twenty years are in whole settlement with the Badshahnama
but are on paper in a modest grace. The history comes down to 1068 A.H, the time
in which Aurangzeb was identified Emperor, but of this incidence he takes no
notice. The writer does not inform us whether he used any further work later
the Badshahnama as the ignoble of his own, or whether the history of the final
ten years is his own independent work.
