“Migrants notorious for their use of sexual violence

“Migrantsand Refugees are not pawns in the chessboard of Humanity”-PopeFrancisKeepingthat quote in mind, Sri Lanka views the current condition of Rakhine State haslong been regarded as amongst the worst in the world.

Forced labor, humantrafficking, and child labor have become common in modern day Burma. BurmeseMilitary Regime has become notorious for their use of sexual violence as amethod of asserting control and dominance over the men, women and children of Burma. This agenda is not a stranger to UNHCR, having constantly alarming the BurmeseMilitary Regime to respect and acknowledge the Rohingya’s human rights. SriLanka strongly deplores the constant violations of human rights and fundamentalfreedoms” and urges upon the Burmese Military Regime “to take urgentmeasures to put an end to violations of international human rights andhumanitarian law.

“SriLanka believes the present condition constitutes of numerous focal elements, each which need to be addressed discretely. The first being the mammothhumanitarian catastrophe that has torn things apart in the region. The second focalelement to be scrutinized is the intense chauvinistic nationalist philosophybeing propagated by the Burmese Military Junta. Srilanka and their officials ofscrutinized that Rohingya Muslims and other minorities have seen discriminationand violence directed at them, preventing them from fully enjoying their humanrights and fundamental freedoms.

At the basis of this discrimination is the1982 Citizenship Act, which the international community has continuouslycriticized. Sri Lanka shows immense concern for hundreds of thousands ofhelpless Rohingyas who are stranded in temporary refugee camps in direconditions and further believes permitting them full citizenship and lettingthem enjoy all human rights in their native land of Burma is the only solutionto solve the plight of this oppressed minority. Sri Lanka and its officialshave been proposing that UNHCR must work towards ensuring not only the safetyand protection of refugees seeking asylum in Burma’s neighboring countries, butit must also work towards creating a safe, accessible, and viable livingenvironment for resettlement of these refugees into the new societies.
