Radioisotope thermoelectric generators· The most used and well-established technologiesfor power in deep space travel is RTG, Radioisotope thermoelectric generators,as these provide power from using thermos couples and the heat produced by thedecay of radioisotopes used and the cold atmosphere.· These are used mainly because being in deepspace means there is little to no available solar energy to be used for powergeneration· It’s also a better option as there is no need toshut down itself at night due to lack of solar energy as the RTG can workthroughout irrespective of the time.· It’s made up of three main parts o The Radioisotope heat source o Power convertero Radiatora.
Multi mission radioisotope thermoelectricgenerators § The latest version of the RTG is the MMRTG,Multi mission radioisotope thermoelectric generators § It has an efficiency of 6.3% and has a life ofup to 14 years b. Stirling radioisotope generator§ It uses a piston arrangement which takesadvantage of the heat produced by the decay of the radioisotope for producingelectrical power rather than a conventional thermocouple § It has a specific power of up to 6 We/Kg and asystem efficiency of 30% and last about 14 years § It has a risk of damaging the instruments onboard due to its vibration during power production.§ Technology that can contain these vibrations areunder research.
