Lonesome dove is probably one of the greatest country western movies of all time, and in my opinion maybe the all time greatest movie.
The story was based on true events and influenced by Goodnight and Loving, King Ranch, and Comanche Moon. Larry McMurtry wrote the prize winning film in 1971 to originally star John Wayne and James Stewart, however John Wayne turned it down and the movie was shelved for over ten years; the movie debuted in 1986 and instantly became a all time favorite and prize-winner.Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving were a few of the last remaining retired Texas Rangers that won over Texas and surrounding states from the Mexicans and Indians in the mid to late 1800’s. Charles Goodnight, know as the “father of the Texas panhandle” and often recognized as one of the greatest cowman in history spent his years taming the west and developing a established herding trail to the northern plains with Comanche fighting Oliver Loving. The movie is actually influenced on their greatest and last adventure to the northern plains; the two partners buy 700 head of cattle at the border and drive them to free land in Montana and Wyoming where grass and water are plentiful.
The movie for the most part follows the true story of the two with the main climax being when Loving is fatally injured and Goodnight promises to burry him back in Texas. Charles Goodnight main legacy is Palo Duro Canyon and the town “Goodnight, Texas”, Goodnight also founded the Texas Cattlemen Association.Oliver Loving has a “Loving County Texas”, “Loving, Texas”, and “Loving, New Mexico” named after him as well as being voted as one of the greatest all time cowboys inducted to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. These two men shared the same passions for the west and can both be thanked for their contributions to the greatest part of Texas. King Ranch, the largest, greatest, and most successful ranching and farming operation in US history.King ranch is comprised of 825,000 continuous acres and is known of their legendary horse and cattle operations and breeding inovations. Larry McMurtry was very influenced by the legacy and history of King Ranch, and Mr.
King himself in the late 1800’s as he tamed southwest Texas and the border area. In fact McMurtry’s interest in the Ranch’s legacy is what lead him to find a truly great story to base his movie off of.Comanche Moon is Lonesome Dove’s prequel written about Goodnight and Loving’s Texas Rangers years before their cowboy years. The story goes on to tell about three legendary battles with the Comanche’s and horse theifs in central Texas. An unknown author wrote the story unofficially and after McCurtry read the story, it inspired him to continue Goodnight and Loving’s story in “Lonesome Dove”, “Comanche Moon”, “Lonesome Dove Series” and “Streets of Laredo”.
