Child Developmentl 20 October 15, 2013 Interview I conducted my interview with Rebecca Nault, preschool teacher at Learn Charter school. The interview took place on site in Ms. Nault’s directors office on October 4th at 1 1 :45 pm while her students were down for a nap. Ms. Nault was very forthcoming with information, so I decided to ask her all twenty of my interview questions. During my interview, there were only a couple of instances were she would not expound on her answer. After the interview concluded, Ms. Nault thanked me for taking the time o interview her and having interest in the field of education. ) What is your name? “Rebecca Nault” Tell me a little about your background “l graduated from UW-Madison with a BS in Human Development and Family Studies and Erikson Institute with a MS in Child Development. I was a Developmental Therapist for a few years, then Joined Teach For America in 2010. I have been teaching the same grade at the same school since then. ” 2) What is your impression of the field of Early Childhood Education? “I think it is an unappreciated field, and a ield that works with children at the most impressionable time in their development.

More people need understand the value of Early Childhood Education and help develop the teachers and staff that work with children at this age. ” 3) What have you learned about this field that was new or surprising? “l was surprised at the lack of access to quality programs. ” 4) What advice would you give to a “novice” (new person) entering into this field? 1) “Always remember that what you say to a child becomes their inner voice. 2)You should always be respectful of them as a person. ) Relax, you can only do so much.

Just do your best and think about what is in your locus of control. 4) What you are doing is important! ” 5) What is your opinion of “professional growth” in this field? “It is difficult to find quality professional development. ” 6) Do you have a favorite theory or theorist? If so, please explain why you like this particular theory or theorist. “Bronfrenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. It reminds me that we cannot separate the child from the systems of their environment. As a teacher, it reminds me to think about the reasons behind the tudents actions.

By thinking of the reasons behind the actions, I can better prevent negative actions. ” 7) How would you describe your “personal philosophy’? “l believe that every child can learn, every child is unique, every child needs a safe and clean environment, and we must nurture our children. Therefore, it is my Job to 8) Do you have any role models, mentors, etc.? If so, what did you learn from them? “Unfortunately, I do not have a role model or mentor in the teaching profession. ” 9) Have child development courses prepared you for your current position? es” 10) How do you feel children learn best? “Through play and through hands on activities. ” 1 1) What do you think provides a quality early childhood experience? “A safe and nurturing environment that provides learning activities. ” 12) What age group do you enjoy working with and why? “All of 0-5 because there is so much changing and growing in this time. Each age is unique! Although, I really do love teaching pre-k students how to read! ” 13) Where do you see yourself in this field 3 years from now? “Either still teaching or being a curriculum coach. 4) What keeps you motivated to stay in this field? “The difference I see at the end of the year, and hearing that my students continue to exceed in other grades. ” 1 5) What resources would you recommend that are useful for this field? “Experience and observing other teachers. If so, please give a few examples? mies, I worked with families as a Developmental Therapist. I interacted with parents weekly to help them interact with their children. 7) Do you have experience in observing and assessing children? If so please describe? mies, I did it as a therapist, as well as a teacher. ” 18) How do you accommodate for children with diverse special needs? “Each child is different, it depends on their needs. ” 19) Do you feel advocacy is important in this field?
