I am Thomas Paul, an engineeringgraduate with profound interest in telecommunication sector. This passion alongwith my dream to study in an internationally reputed and technologically advancedinstitution, me where intelligence integrates with practicality encouraged tochoose the Master of Engineering course with a major in TelecommunicationsEngineering offered by the University Of Wollongong, Australia.I hail from Kalady, a census town inKerala, India. I completed my schooling at ViswajyothiCMI Public School, a reputed institution run by CMI fathers, located atAngamaly, Kerala. In the year 2011, I completed my 10th grade with aCGPA of 9.
1 out of 10 and following this, I passed my 12th grade in2013 from the same institution which follows the CBSE board curriculum with76%.In the same year(2013), I joined for Bachelor of Technology in Electronicsand Communication Engineering ,an undergraduate degree program ,offered byFederal Institute of Science And Technology (FISAT),affiliated to Mahatma Gandhiuniversity ,Kerala. I completed my bachelor’s with first class in 2017 with aCGPA of 6.90.Apart from academic activities, I wasalso an enthusiastic participant in scholastic exams, science exhibitions andevents both at school and state level right from my school days and also havewon prizes in many. It was these exhibitions and fares that introduced theexciting world of electronics to me .I was also able to do a project based on computer programming in my 12thgrade which introduced me to programming languages like c, c++ .
During the four years of myundergraduate degree, I was introduced to the concepts of telecommunicationwhich interested and captivated me. Along with the curriculum based studies Iwas also an active participant in tech fests, cultural fests both at intra andinter level. The passion to share my knowledge and help others seeking the samemade me an enthusiastic volunteer in IEEE.I went on to become the Student LinkRepresentative and later the MD Chairperson of my Student Branch of FISAT.As anIEEE member, I was able to participate in workshops, seminars and webinars onlatest technologies and innovations in my area of study. I was a FirefoxStudent Ambassador and also an active member of Electronic and CommunicationHeuristics Organization (ECHO) of my college.
I was able to organize andco-organize various technical andmanagerial events during this tenure which not only increased my technical knowledge but alsohelped me to improve my interpersonal skills, molding me to the professional Iam today.I was able to do a major project in myfinal year based on ORB feature extraction and Support Vector Machine (SVM)Algorithm called Machine Perception along with my team mates, during which Iwas able to work with arduino and python programming. In addition to this, Ihave also taken various seminars and talks on latest technologies as part ofmicro activities in my college. Moreover I have also participated in hackathonsand other coding competitions.
Along with this, during my college days I wasintroduced to tools like MATLAB.The fervor to know more abouttechnologies in the telecommunication sector has encouraged me to choose amasters course in the same field. I chose Australia, as the country is muchmore technologically advanced than my home country India, and the educationsystem is up-to-date.
Australians are always known to be friendly andwelcoming. In addition, the weather is much more pleasant compared to otherdeveloped countries. Even though similar courses are available in India, anAustralian education would allow me to study in a multi linguistic society, where technology integrates with cultural diversity. Also the facilities andfaculty are top notch and world class. The Master of Engineering course atUniversity Of Wollongong will not only help me to increase my knowledge intelecommunication sector but also provides ample opportunities to gain properindustry training and hands on experience. Moreover the university is a fivestar rated one, ranked 232 in the world by QS world rankings.
A master’s degreefrom this reputed institution will elevate my job profile in an internationallevel.Tuition fee payable for the entirecourse is $62,985.60. In the 2nd year, there are 3 compulsory subjects,an advanced project and 3 elective subjects.
Assessments are done in the formof assignments, examinations, tutorials, lab tests and quizzes. This two year course will help me toincrease my knowledge in subjects like network engineering ,communication systems, microcontrollers and itsapplications and so on. Along with this, it will also introduce me to newfields like wireless communication and optical communication technologies, technologies with a huge scope for development. In addition, the advancedproject, which is done as part of the curriculum, will provide me an upper handin securing my dream job, that of a telecom engineer back in India. In today’s era of technologicaladvancement, the future of telecommunication industry is promising as thedemand for fast and secure communication is ever increasing. Currently India isthe worlds 2nd largest telecom market and has 3rd highestnumber of internet users in the world but still lacks skilled engineers in thisfield and the demand will surpassingly increase in the future as the industryis evolving and its influence is being felt in other sectors too. Main telecomplayers in India are private companies like Reliance Jio , Airtel, Idea,Vodafone along with government owned BSNL.
Upon successful completion of thecourse, I will be joining Vodafone as a telecommunication project engineer backin India. In conclusion, I am fully confidentthat this master’s degree from University Of Wollongong, Australia, willimprove my career opportunities and the time I spend in Australia will be amemorable one.
