Widtsoe’s book In Search of Truth,I found that he emphasized on the fact that progress should be welcomed andthat it wasn’t something to fear. Weshould move forward with a clear mind and a clear heart. However, he warned that we should not readilyaccept the supposed truth as soon as it is given to us. We should be smart enough to test the ideasthat have been offered to us.
Ibelieve that we should build our lives on a firm foundation of truth that wehave personally found to be true. Whenwe have a firm foundation in truth we will not be easily swayed by the thingsthat are claimed to be true. This notonly applies to scientific truth but also to spiritual truth. “Often an apparent change is only a new way ofstating an old truth.” (Pg. 9, In Search of Truth) Many people who seek change are expecting alarge and life changing monumental moment.
However much of the time it is just a progression of what we hadbefore. It is the same concept as beforejust ‘more’ advanced. “Facts areharmless enough; but the inferences drawn from them, sometimes true, oftenfalse, may involve serious consequences.
” (Pg. 15, In Search of Truth) We, as a society, rely too much on the factsgiven to us. We believe everything weread and all that we see, without a second thought. That is a dangerous game to play, seeing asit can lead us down a dark road that is difficult to get off of.
We need to remember to search in faith andlearn with the spirit even for scientific matters. They are inseparably connected to eachother. Those who actually lovetruth have to search it out and find it themselves.
If they desire truth, and an honest truththey have to be willing to put the work in to find it. Finding an honest truth has gotten harder andharder throughout the decades. It usedto be found in books and in the research done, but as the world has progressedmore and more of the truth is getting smudged and smeared to make it so peoplehear what they want to hear rather than the truth. Many people say they desire the truth, butthey really want the least painful thing to believe in. They want to stay in their comfort zones andwhatever doesn’t fit in their comfort zone is wrong.
..We need to accepttruth but we also need to be wary of the truth that is offered to us. Unless we test it ourselves we won’t know ifit is actually the truth. We would beblindly following the facts that have been given us. If we aren’t skeptical of the truth that isbeing published eventually we will fall into a web of lies that overcomes us.
