“Literature is where we go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where we go hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, or the imagination and of the heart. ” The book The Help written by Kathryn Stockett connects to the topic because the book looks at the most important things in literature like book, articles, laws and bills that make up the time the characters live in. These women knew they would be in great danger, but they wanted their voices/the truth to be heard by their society. If not the whole truth is to be said out all at once they would still keep trying.
Their imagination of what would happen if they published the book gave them more enthusiasm and a push forward to keep going. In this book, Stockett, wanted to tell us that if you really follow your heart because it is telling you the truth then you should keep listening to it and not to ever look back at the past or down to what is lower. In The Help it hits the idea of literature being important in everyday life because it helps people to withstand others,do what they believe in and achieve goals.Having people pressure someone into thinking and acting a sort of way is addictive mostly when everyone was made to think it is right, so having characters like Skeeter, Minny, and even Aibileen withstanding others is amazing and knowing right from wrong. When being friends with an antagonist like Hilly Holbrook who has so much power in the community is hard and telling her an opinion that doesn’t math hers is even harder. ”Miss Skeeter, she frowning at Miss Hilly.
She set her cards down face up and say real matter-a-fact, “Maybe we ought to just build you a bathroom outside, Hilly” “(Stockett 1. 9). Skeeter saying that is very risky since Hilly not only is her best friend but can ruin her but she doesn’t care because Skeeter knows right and wrong when she sees it even if she is not supposed to. Minny finds herself in a situation with Hilly instead of being friends it would be maid boss relationship “She telling everybody in town I’m stealing! That’s why I can’t get no work! That witch done turned me into the Smart-Mouthed Criminal Maid a Hide County! ” (Stockett 2. 111).
The quote gives a bit of insight on Minny and Hilly’s personality. It shows Minny’s strength and determination how she will not cave at bullies feet when the bully wants you more than ever to even if it means you cannot pay the bills that week or even not have a job for the whole month. With Skeeter is breaking the expectation of society for a lady for trying to achieve her goal of being a writer of a sort and not getting married. “Are you…do you…find men attractive? Are you having unnatural thoughts about…… girls or women? …Because it says in this article there’s a cure, a special root tea —” (Stockett 6. 6) The quote tells you the assumptions people make about Skeeter mostly her for caring about her career and less about men and getting married. Even though people think and say things like the quote it doesn’t matter to Skeeter she ignores it all and knows what is more important to her. What Skeeter wanted to do was a hard track to go down since it was dangerous for anyone who helped her but she figured out what the right thing to do was. “Don’t waste your time on obvious things.
Write about what disturbs you; particularly if it seems to bother no one else” (Stockett 6. 8).It tells you that the racism and discrimination does disturb Skeeter and yes no one else sees it and if they do see it they shut their eyes or look the other way. She risks her life to do a topic she believes in. Minny has a different way of showing her emotions and telling people how they treat others is wrong. “”I ain’t telling, I ain’t telling nobody about that pie.
But I give her what she deserve! … I ain’t never gone get no work again, Leroy gone kill me…. ” (Stockett 2. 119). Minny has put her poop in a chocolate pie and gave it to Hilly to eat because Minny believes it is revenge for the way she treats others. For all the discrimination, lying, racism and pure evil things she has done to people and Minny while they couldn’t fight back because they are or were weaker in society standards. Minny’s always said what she wants to whomever no matter the situation. ” I saw the way my mama acted when Miss Woodra brought her home, all yes Ma’aming, No Ma’aming. I sure do thank you Ma’aming.
Why I got to be like that? I know how to stand up to people” (Stockett 3. 130). Minny loves her opinion and love even more to say them to people no matter how white or black they come.Minny also knows everything she says is truth which makes everything more humorous to read and it will always leave a mark.
“Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future.
With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking. As said by Stephen Hawking, meaning that through our education and literature we are to to tell the world of whats really happening and to show them that with our literature we can achieve the greatest for example the technology that we have reached to today. “I ain’t gone kill him, Aibileen. I promise. We gone go stay with Octavia till we find a place a out own. ” (34.
155). This proved to us that throughout the whole book Minny’s been struggling with her husband Leroy, but after they got the truth out by writing the book they felt free. These women felt that they were able to do anything, therefore she got what she wanted for so long, to divorce Leroy. “Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you.
What you believe, remember, you can achieve. ”(Mary Kay Ash). Try your best and you’ll achieve more than what you thought you can actually do. “My boy Treelore always said, were going to have a writer in the family one day, I guess its goin’ be me. Here Aibileen is saying that when her son Treelore was alive he said, one day someone in the family was going to be a writer and that they will be ending up telling the truth and showing everyone what its like to be a negro. Therefore, Aibileen was remembering what he said and she said that I guess I am going to be the family writer and she will be the one that will let her voice be heard throughout the United States of America.
If you have a task to perform and are vitally interested in it, excited and challenged by it, then you will exert maximum energy. But in the excitement, the pain of fatigue dissipates, and the exuberance of what you hope to achieve overcomes the weariness. As worded by Jimmy Carter, despite all the challenges you have in life to get what you want you will have to go through them so you can achieve the best and be the top. “ Its a job offer at Harper’s Magazine in New York. As a…
copy editor’s assistant. I’m pretty sure Missus Stein got it for me. ” Skeeter here is telling Minny and Aibileen that she finally got approved for the job with Elaine Stein. This is what the whole book of “The Help” was mainly for, for Skeeter to get a job with Elaine Stein nd to also show that world the perspectives of the Negroes and that they too are as important as the whites.
In the novel The Help Minny Aibileen and Skeeter are all having a hard time in society and life trying to break the cycle of racism and expectation of society while trying to be their own person. The book hits the topic of withstand others, achieve goals and do what they believe in and the characters in their own way hit one or all three aspects. The novel Skeeter wrote helped at the end to do a lot of good and put spotlight on the bad things in Jackson Mississippi.
