From an early age, I was introduced to theworld of business that helped in the development of my tacit knowledge. Myfather is a businessman who runs an SME in imports and exports. As a kid, I remember himbringing back goodies from the countries he would visit. I remember looking upwhat that particular country had to offer and would base a request on myresearch and curiosity.
With him being one of the earliest importersof personal computers back in the early 2000’s in India, I had an early access to thesedevices. As a result, quite conceivably, much beforeformally starting college, I had developed a flair for research. My academicexperience transcended the boundaries of the classroom, because I believe thatexploring beyond one’s boundary trains the mind to identify comfort zones asmuch as it provides opportunities to step outside them. I proactively soughtunique internships, which included working with creative minds at a designstudio. This experience comprised of a market research on the impact ofbranding for start-ups, as well as workshops and conferences for networkingwith experts and influencers. Consecutively, I took up the opportunity tointern with a Health and Lifestyle startup where an enthusiastic bunch workedvigorously towards scaling.
Along with conduction of surveys on the impact ofClinic Management for Healthcare Professionals, there was active contributionof strategic inputs based on the market research. I was also involved in thedevelopment of promotional materials, a product of my active participation invarious intra and inter collegiate marketing fests. The urge to excelat domains outside of academics peaked, as I was appointed the Co-President ofthe marketing club at my university in the final year. With the intention ofpromoting creativity and out of the box thinking, competitions as simple astaking a selfie to represent one’sfavorite brand or meme marketing wereintroduced for the student body by the marketing club. Working with an NGO can instill extraordinaryresponsibility at a relatively young age and with little experience. Being apart of Greenpeace India society did justthat. As a fundraiser, I undertook initiatives in Environmental awarenessprograms and Tele-calling for raising public awareness on several keyenvironmental issues.
My bachelors of business administrationconstituted several courses in Entrepreneurship Development and marketing thatframed my knowledge of business. While the internships helped me gain anoverall understanding of the workplaces, my professors encouraged me to digdeeper into my area of interest through the mentorship program. As a result ofthese initiatives, I had two summer projects and one dissertation by the end ofmy bachelor’s degree.Meanwhile, my smart and hard work earned me afew titles such as ‘First in Academic Performance – Gold Medallist’, ‘BestStudent Award in Marketing’ and ‘Best in Leadership Qualities’. Whilst having to choose between familybusiness and higher education, I opted for a third alternative and worked witha start-up after my graduation, a choice based on my knowledge and skills andway out of my comfort zone.
