Enrichment planting is the process on
improving the quality of the plantation or forests. It is the action taken in
order to maintain or increase the plantation or forest condition. There are few
ways being practises on implement the enrichment planting method in forestry
sector such as:-
The process where different timber of
species being planted according to their ultimate crown-diameter ratio. It is
being used to obtain any of a wide range of forest management objective where
to undertake to reduce density, control stocking in young stand, prevent
stagnation, shorten the rotation and speed the production of trees of a given
The most important method on the
enrichment planting as it will affect the entire plantation condition if the
wrong site is being chosen. We need to have knowledge and need to consider the
local weather condition in order to prevent the damage on the enrichment
planting process. This method should been commence during the dry period and
stop before the rainy season.
Preparation of base lines
All the vegetation that ranging from
herbaceous undergrowth to small trees found along the base lines should been
cleared leaving only bigger trees especially of the commercial timber species
to serve as Station Trees.
Preparation of planting line and
The plantation need to be planted aligned
on sun’s direction in order to allow the planted seedling to obtain maximum
exposure to sunlight. The vegetation need to be cleared from planting corridors
and need to be stacked on the adjacent unclear areas and left to degrade
naturally. All the non-commercial and over changing the planting corridors will
Nature Trail Establishment in Bukit UMS”
Based on the project “Restoration
& Nature Trail Establishment in Bukit UMS” established by Institute for Tropical
Biology and Conservation (ITBC) in Universiti Malaysia Sabah, they had also
implement the enrichment planting method in order to maintain the condition of
the forest. Figure 1 shows the implementation of enrichment planting practices
by this project. It is purposes on sustain the forest condition and continue
the enrichment of existing secondary forest area.
implementing the enrichment planting
Enrichment planting requires the
canopy manipulation to optimise the growth and survival of the planted trees. Usually,
we need to practices this enrichment planting on the potential degraded land
and also the degraded land. The practices is influence by the ability of the
species to survive as young seedlings under existing natural forest stands.
As a prevention on making the
potential degraded land to become the real degraded land, we need to secure it
with a good action such as enrichment planting and many others actions.
are few advantages that can be gain by implement the enrichment planting
process which are:-
Helps to conserve the habitat
Enrichment planting can help on
conserving the watersheds and the microclimates of the plantation area or the
Maintains a supply of natural
Natural resources that provide a
beneficial purposes to people or organism that live in or near the area. Thus,
it will maintain the food sources and the shelter/habitat for the wild plant
and wild animals.
Minimal the disturbance of soil
This will help on maintaining the
soil structure and the recycling nutrients.
Inexpensive way to obtain planting
It will happens when a self-sown
seedling are available.
