Emile or On Education

In the novel “Emile or On Education” Rousseau describes the process of bringing up a child put in his charge. Rousseau appears to be a full-time governor of a boy on his long road of maturation and establishment as personality. Rousseau controls and shapes all Emile’s actions throughout his growing into manhood. Rousseau argues that a real man should be able to survive in any milieu, as well as to cope with wilderness of either populated city or deserted island .

Therefore, Rousseau deepens in the old reality of mature as the only way to adapt to changing environment. It is the nature that gives humans power and knowledge to survive in any environment. Moreover, Rousseau doesn’t expect from a man to be a person for sale. Interestingly, Rousseau doesn’t appreciate the role of medicine in raising children as he believes in natural healthiness of life which is close to nature and natural laws.

In other words, those people who highly defend natural balance can’t fall ill . Nevertheless, Rousseau assumes that medicine can be applied in hygiene which is defined as virtue. In his viewpoint, the foundation of the virtue is strength. Virtue means being weak or strong by nature. Virtue is the merit of the just man distinguishing the good and the evil . Speaking about educational process, Rousseau argues that nature is the source of human education and, therefore, we don’t have control over it.

Children should be encouraged to build things themselves, to demonstrate their creativity and abilities, to show what they are capable of without help of adults. Children shouldn’t simply perceive things made by others. They should discover the world themselves creating their own reality. Morality plays important role in educational process, although the only morality the children should be taught is to do not harm. Doing good is, thus, contradictory and false .
