Bring back conscription & Conscription

The number of people who are joining the military is decrease sharply in recent years. Some people think that it is a good thing because war is not happening. However, other people argue that young people need to join the army to build their characteristics and improve their physically. According to Dennis De Souza in ‘’Conscription? No way! ”, published in Daily Tribune on Wednesday 3 November 2010, we are living in a peaceful region and there are several better ways to making a contribution to society so people do not have to join the army.

In contrast, Colonel R J Blythe in “Bring back conscription”, published in Daily Tribune, Wednesday 27 October 2010 believes that joining the army is the best way for young people to have self –respect, job training related-skills and the way out of their poor background. The purpose of this essay is to critically respond to both authors. In the first argument, Blythe states that with the help of the military, young people not only improve their social skills but also their physically. Furthermore, the experience and the knowledge that they could have in the military are more than what they could learn at college.Secondly, the military provides free and good tutors for them to train their jobs in the future such as computers or logistics.

As a result, young people will have a chance to do many jobs after they return from the military. Secondly, they will have good friendships when they travel to many places and meet many people. Souza’s first argument is that there is no reason for us to spending time in the military. A people now live in a peaceful world with no threats, no enemies and good relationships with neighboring countries.Second, the author claims that young people need to have a choice to decide what useful activities they have to do to contribute a country. It is better if they work in a school or do environmental work rather than serving the military.

Souza and Blythe both discuss people should or should not join the military. While Blythe share the ideas on the benefits that young people can improve their social skills in the military, Souza has a weak point when he mentions that the country do not face any threats from another country and have a good relations with other nations. How does he know when the country is in trouble or not? The problem may come suddenly and soldiers need to being well prepared for any circumstance. Another weak point of Souza is that without enemies, joining the military is unreasonable. The military in these days is not just to fight against enemies, but also to do useful work. For example, the army in Vietnam is travel to many places to help elderly people by repair their houses or talking with them when they feel lonely. Furthermore, they have been growing trees in the mountains or the forest to avoid deforestation. They will do useful works to contribute a society.

In the second argument, Blythe has a good point when he said that the military provides good services and benefits for their soldiers. Firstly, if the people want to serve the army for their whole life, they will have benefits from it. For instance, according to usmilitary. about. com, the US veterans will have a home loan guarantee with lower payment requirements and the reduction of interest rates.

Furthermore, they can have higher life insurance and death gratuity. Moreover, according to militarybenefit. org, Military Benefit Association provided careers to nearly 30,000 veterans and this service is completely free of charge.Souza’s second argument is that another nation will be misunderstand if the military preparing and training the armed forces. However, the author ignores the fact that every nation also has preparation for their army, not just his country.

The preparation is to protect the country in a worst situation. People will not do good work without the preparation. For instance, in studying, if students do not study, they will fail. In conclusion, Blythe has a strong argument about the benefits of the military. He believes that people will improve social skills and the military will provide good services when joint the military. On the other hand, Souza has a weaker point when he says that people are living in a peaceful world and they need to do a meaningful work such as environmental work rather than learning how to fight against the enemy. However, the author needs to know that it is a pleasure for people to work in the military to serve their home country.

Furthermore, the purpose of this work is not only to protect but also contribute to their home country. Overall, joining the military is a good choice to contribute the country and people will have many benefits from it.
