Besides that, there have other issuesin the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’. One of them being the wellbeing of thefamily. Chris and Linda have a child, Christopher. They were happy and carefreeuntil Chris’s plan to sell all the bone density scanners failed. Since hecouldn’t sell enough, they didn’t have enough money to pay the bills thoughLinda was also working. The severe financial concern made Linda leave thefamily and went to New York.
Referring back to the movie ‘ThePursuit of Happiness’. Within the Gardner family, the audiences could seenumerous occasions where they used the process of communication in the movie.Firstly, when Chris was telling his wife about how he got his stolen bonedensity scanner back on the balcony. He was expecting a positive reaction from her,but she acted negatively. The way they were communicating was by using verbalcommunication which is talking to each other. When they were talking, their neighborwas smacking the dust out of his carpet making loud noises.
The loud noisesinterrupted their conversation and Chris told the neighbor to stop what he wasdoing. The loud noises coming from the neighbor is called physical noise. Other than that example in the movie, there is another scene when Christopher and his family were having breakfast.Linda was talking to Chris with an upset tone because he did not pay the rentfor almost three months. Christopher grasped the gist of the situation, so hewas sitting in silence and staring at his food when his parents were having aconversation. This is also known as a way of communicating but rather thanusing verbal communication Christopher used non-verbal communication. The typeof non-verbal communication that is being discussed is body language. Accordingto Bovee (2016), verbal communication is the expression of informationthrough language which is composed of words and grammar.
On-verbalcommunication defined as communication that occurs without words such as bodymovements, touch, voice patterns and design of surroundings. (Lesikar and Pettit)(1999). Besides that, the day Linda picked upChristopher and went to the park and dropped him to his dad. That day was thelast day of her meeting Christopher. She was leaving to New York City. Beforeleaving, Linda hugged her son and kissed him while he was sleeping. After that, the audiences could see that she was crying so much.
Although she was leavingher son to go to a better place, it is obvious that she loves her son fondly. That scene showed that Linda was communicating through non-verbalcommunication. She used facial expression and touch to present her love to herson.
Another scene that is related is whenChris roughly pulled the collars of Christopher’s shirt and almost hurt him.Chris and Christopher found out that they got kicked out of their apartmentafter coming home from trying to sell a scanner for the whole day. Christopherwho is a child was so upset so he was telling his dad to open the door andkicking the door stubbornly. Chris reacted aggressively. He pulled his sonshirt on the collars and told him to stop. That was the only time Chrisaggressively reacted to any behavior of his son.
This happened because ofphysiological noise. Based from our studies, physiological noise is thebiological influence on the communication process. For this scene, thephysiological noise occurred because of the fatigueless of Chris.
He was tryingto sell a scanner for the whole day and moreover he failed to sell to acustomer who was actually interested because the scanner broke. Next, a scene where Christopher andhis dad were in the subway station after getting kicked out of their apartment.Christopher was shouting at his dad “Where are we going, dad?!” but his dad wasnot giving any reaction nor looking at him. Christopher was frustrated so heshouted once again and then his dad actually responded that time. The reason whyhis dad was not reacting the first time is because he was figuring out whereare they going to stay that night. There was an interruption when Christopherwas communicating with his dad using verbal communication. The interruption iscalled psychological noise because his dad was distracted with his thoughts. The family was doing great back thenas we could see when Chris and Linda were buying a lot of bone density scannersand putting them into their house.
They were also wearing clean and colorfulclothes. They looked happy and excited about the scanners. During this scene, the director was portraying the happy life of the Gardner family. Little didthey know that their plan was going to fail, and they were on their way to lifewith financial problems. Then, the director showed the difficult life of theGardner family. But later in the movie, the director showed that Chris Gardnerwas living his dream life, being a stockbroker and unconcern of his financialstanding. Basically, the director was conveying the audience that life has itsups and downs.
You are the one who changes your life not anyone else.
