About 80% of today’s processed food contains genetically modified organisms, known as GMO. A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. Today, more than 40 types of plants have been genetically modified and on the market to buy.
Thomas Hemphill stated that, “The Grocery Manufacturers Association, an industry group representing over 300 major food, beverage, and consumer product companies, reports that 70-80 percent of the processed foods that American consumers eat today contain plants that have been genetically engineered.” Most soybeans, corn, canola, cotton, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, some zucchini and yellow squash are genetically modified. Products such as oil, corn syrup, and sugar are created from these crops and added to processed foods. This explains why nearly 80 percent of processed and most fast foods contain GMOs. So are GMO safe for us and the environment? Actually the answers aren’t clear, therefore the food and drug administration does not do its safety studies on genetically modified food.
Instead, the biotech companies that are trying to make profit of their crops do their own safety assessments, which the FDA only reviews. The biotech companies that makes genetically modified food, wants to make money in the easiest possible way, so their results show that GMO are not harmful. However, there were animal studies with negative results from GMO that include organ damage and immune system problems. It is also not save for the environment.
The problem is that we have a product in our food supply with unknown health and environmental implications. At the very least, we should have these foods labeled. If the biotechs food are safe then why not label them? Basically, the only people benefiting from genetically modified foods are the companies that make them. If they aren’t disclosing their studies to consumers who just want to know what is in their food, then they are being a bit sketchy. Genetically modified food should be labeled therefore, we have to rights to know what is in our food.
