After the World War I (also known as the Great War) had caused so much devastation and a complete social break down; Alferd Korzybski, a Polish-American philosopher and scientist developed the theory of general semantics. With this system he hoped for more effective human evaluation and that humankind would never have to engage in such destruction again.
This War was brought on by nationalism, little ethnic concern and political gain, which still remains today. He explains, in other words that the world is what it is.Korzybski basically explains anyone can make all inds of maps and models of how the world works across time, and some of them can be very useful, and we can talk about them with great benefit. But the models and maps and any words one can put together can never do more than approximate the actual world or the actual phenomena being examined. The actual territory is beyond verbal description.
As humans we make abstractions all the time. If somebody took my verbal description, the question always remains, what actually happened? With the hope of changing this view he has come up with a way for each generation to enefit from previous generation with what he calls the time-biding system. He will map out some of the causes of World War l, and propose ten important cautionary general semantics lessons for the leaders of the world’s nations. (Although World War I occurred nearly one hundred years ago, its legacy is still present today. The beginning of WWI began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Fedinand, on June 28, 1914. He was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Throne and was killed by a Serbian Black Hand.Austria-Hungary reacted with ultimatum to Serbia.
They never thought Serbia would agree with the severe terms of the ultimate. To their Surprise since Serbian was tied with Russia, Russia then declared war on Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary then asked Germany to support them in war Germany not only agreed they also encouraged the attack.
Russia was bound to the treaty with Serbia and Germany to Austria-Hungary. Germany responded by invading neutral Belgium, Britain was obligated to defend Belgium and France then declared war on Germany. When the United States saw this happening they declared a policy of neutrality. Japan horned Britain and declared war on Germany and two days later Austria- Hungry responded by declaring war on Japan. Italy was allied to both Germany and Austria-Hungary and cited a clause to permit them from entering the war. The war that began with Germany and Austria-Hungary had quickly turned into a global conflict brought on by Otto von Bismarck, act of the alliance system.
In 1866, he acted in the war with Austria and France over disputed territory. The war ended with victory for Germany and a North German Federation.Bismarck then went to war with France to try and achieve the same results and unite all states under the Prussian banner.
The Prussians wiped out the French military and forced them to pay a billion of dollars which resulted in the forming the German Republic. Bismarck stood behind the German Republic not concerned at all with the alliance between Britain and France. Using this technique lead the nations of Europe to take part in alliance system which they thought assured them protection. Not realizing this had bound them together like chained prisoners and the next generation had not control on rather or not to go to war in the near future.Alferd Korzybski believes previous and future wars could and can be prevented if hought out correctly. He suggested ten cautionary general semantics lessons for the nations of war. If our nation was to follow these semantics we can ensure our nation will be better off in the future.
They are listed as, Delayed evaluating, which means we should not base our decisions on previous actions we should always investigate the current situation. Indexing, meaning there is no way two things can be identical in every aspect. Logical fate, every action will have consequences rather they are good or bad.Dating, any and every decision that is made should have dates attached o that in the near future changes can be made. A map may not adequately describe the territory, meaning that in someone else words details can always be left out.
Etc. (one cannot know all about anything) there is always two sides to every story so neither is absolutely correct. Extensional orientations always search for the facts instead of going off ones opinion. Distinguish between inferences and facts; if this is not done things can always end up with the wrong conclusion. Statistical Thinking, degrees of probability are always involved with one’s knowledge. To have peaceful orld; national leaders should learn and apply the formulations of general semantics. He was a man whose intent was to have world peace; in other words, pick your battles wisely because it can have a large effect on our nation if not. After reading this article I have a better understanding of the intention of Alferd Korzybski.
The author lead me to believe this man was a very abstract thinker and truly believed he could make a difference and one day bring world peace. I think the author did a good Job at explaining the feeling; Alferd Korzybski must have had in suggesting our nation follow these procedures. He explained in depth the reasoning behind Alferd Korzybski decision and why he felt this was something the nation had to take action toward in order to bring our nation peace. He made it very interesting by going into great detail on each and every semantic lesson with the actual meaning and relating it back to the negligence and the mindless acts that lead us to World War l.
He gave me a clear view at the type of man Alferd Korzybski was. The author defiantly did his research; I know this because I went back and searched several documents and found everything to be accurate.
