Abstract:

Background: Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy
(ESWL) is the best choice treatment for upper urinary tract stone. Today,
patients often enter into medical procedures without complete understanding
this can be disturbing them physically and psychologically. Aim of the
study is to evaluate the effect of pre-procedure teaching module for patients
undergoing first session of ESWL on patients’ anxiety level, claustrophobia and
pain perception.  Methods:
Research design: A quasi- experimental research design was utilized in this
study, setting: the study was conducted in ESWL unit at Prince Mutaib
Bin Abelaziz Center Hospital, Saudi Arabia. Sample: A convenience sample
consisted of 74 patients were divided equally into study and control group,
they were taken from the above-mentioned setting. Tools Of data collection:
(1) An interviewing questionnaire sheet: It consisted of two parts; PartI:
demographic and medical data and Part II:  patients’ knowledge questionnaires about ESWL
procedure, post procedure management, diet and life style changes. (2) State–Trait
Anxiety Inventory to assess anxiety (3) Visual analogue scale to measure pain dgree.
(3) Visual analogue scale to assess claustrophobia. Results: 100% of
patients in both groups had poor knowledge regarding to ESWL procedure, post
procedure management, diet and life style changes before receiving pre-procedure
teaching module. After receiving teaching; the study group had significant
improvement in their knowledge, significant lowering in anxiety, claustrophobia
and postoperative pain scores than control group (p <0.05).  Conclusions- Overall findings showed that pre-procedure teaching module for patients undergoing first session of ESWL Led to improvement in patients' knowledge, significant reduction in anxiety, claustrophobia and postoperative pain scores in the study group than control group. Recommendations: education, planned teaching and simple Arabic booklet included (simple explanation of ESWL, preoperative instructions,  post-procedure management, diet and life style modifications that facilitate stone clearance) should be offered on regular basis for patients before ESWL. . Key words: Urolithiasis - pre-procedure teaching module – ESWL – anxiety –claustrophobia – pain.
