As well as being (arguably) the first person to study the unconscious mind this was called psychoanalysis. In addition in 1899 he published his book “The Interpretation of Dreams” which was one of Germany’s most read books of the era with 7 different editions made including being translated to english and republished in 1913. He grew up in the Austrian empire during the 1860s, which was a monarchy about to fall. His family was poor and they lived in a one room apartment, later he attended the University of Vienna at age 17. He was married with six children when his family left Vienna in 1938 before moving to the UK. He was a very heavy cigar smoker which is what lead to him getting buccal (mouth) cancer, after being deemed incurable and in a lot of pain he committed suicide via morphine overdose in september of 1939 at the age of 83.Professional contributionsHe penned ‘The Psychopathology of Everyday Life’ which was the foundation for psychoanalysis this was one of the most widely recognized scientific classics of the 20th century.
He won the Goethe prize in 1930 for his great contribution to psychology and literature. In 1923 he published ‘The Ego and the Id’ which was considered to be extremely influential at the time and laid out a 3-way analysis of the human mind.Cause of DeathMr. Freud death occurred on the 23rd of September in 1939 after he decided to end his life after battling cancer, in a great deal of pain, for 16 years. To execute the suicide he had gotten 21 milliliters of morphine, with the help of a physician. He was dead within hours.
One of the first things Freud said to Dr. Max Schur, who gave him the morphine, when he had met him years prior was “When the time comes, you won’t let me suffer unnecessarily”. He was also quoted saying, “You should give people the opportunity to tell you how they want to die. This further verifies that he wanted to die and possibly wanted to have control over his death rather than the cancer control it for him.
