Atmospheric Issues

Atmospheric IssuesTina BellSCI/275September 1, 2013Bill McIntoshAtmospheric IssuesThe air we breathe outside and inside our homes is more important to us than we know. It affects our families and our loved ones every day of their lives and if we can help in any way to rid our world of these problems wouldn??™t that be great. When people know about things they tend to do something if they can, it is important to know about the dangers that are right in our houses. An indoor air pollutant is mold, it can grow anywhere in doors that stays wet. It produces spores to reproduce and is blown through the air outdoors and in doors. When it lands somewhere that is damp that??™s all it needs to start growing. There is no practical way to remove all indoor molds from the environment the only way to control mold is to eliminate moisture where it grows.

Acid rain has been made acidic from pollutants in the air; it can appear in many forms. The wet form can appear as rain, sleet, snow and fog that has been made more acidic than normal by the pollution in the air. There is a dry type also and it is when gasses and dust become acidic. Both types can be carried by the wind for very long distances sometimes. The dry type can be inhaled and make people sick, the wet type falls on building, cars, people and also can make lakes acidic. There are several ways to control the effects of acid rain, also called acid deposition. There are ways ranging from societal changes to individual action.

According to “Reducing Acid Rain” (2012), ???It is critical that acid deposition be reduced, not only in the United States and Canada, but also throughout the world to preserve the integrity of natural habitats, as well as to reduce damage to man-made structures.??? Some of those ways to reduce acid rain are to understand the cause and effects of acid deposition, clean up exhaust pipes, use alternative energy sources, and take actions as individuals.Scientists are working to understand the effects of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides these are the pollutants that cause acid deposition. They are also collecting air and water samples and measuring them for characteristics such as pH and chemical composition. They are researching the effects of acid deposition on manmade materials like marble and bronze.Moisture prevention is the best way to keep mold from growing in your home, clean and repair gutters and roofs regularly. Mold is part of our natural environment, outdoors mold breaks down dead organic matter like leaves and dead trees. There are many types of mold and none can grow without water or moisture.

When mold starts growing indoors it has a potential to cause health problems with the respiratory system. It can also cause allergic reactions if touched; this can be an immediate or delayed reaction. If you have a mold problem you should clean up any water damage within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. Take up and throw away any water damaged carpet, keep air conditioning drip pans clean and drain pipes flowing properly. Make sure the ground slopes away from your foundation to keep water from building up around it. Just keep everything dry act quickly to make sure all wet surfaces are free of condensation.Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology is a study that found when an infant is exposed to mold in the home its risk for developing asthma more than doubles.

The study doesn??™t say mold causes asthma, but is linked to chronic inflammation of the lung airways and other respiratory problems. If you think your child has been exposed to mold, get a referral to a board certified allergist. They can see what kind of mold your child was exposed to and if they have asthma, and then they can develop a treatment plan. The “Cnn Health” (2011) website. The acid rain, I like to call acid deposition has a Federal Program that says it is has been ???remarkably successful???. The (NAPAP) National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program coordinates its progress and reports it to Congress on the effects of acid deposition on our ecosystem. The new report concludes that they have not only successfully reduced of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power plants but they also exceeded their goals for emissions reduction. They have the best of American science with government actions and innovation to reduce the emissions from the power plants.

They gave the power plants plenty of flexibility in how they reduced their emissions and it turned out it significantly reduced compliance cost. The “Office of Science and Technology Policy” (2012) website. This is some good news because acid deposition could be a problem with harming out environment all over the world. While the NAPAP reports they have reduced emissions and can see improvement we still have areas that cannot fully recover from the acid deposition. They will continue to reduce the emissions and it is projected that they will reduce the number of lakes being affected by the deposition.

It is always good to hear that we our having such good success with these programs to protect our environment and that the cost is not putting the country into more debt. Although we are having success they made it clear that we are just getting started and some of the environment is beyond repair. We still have a long way to go and it is important that we do what we can in our communities and in our homes to prevent these things from happening.According to the mold problems in the homes and our children and families being affected, only we can stop this. It is up to us to get rid of the mold in our homes if we own them. Now if we don??™t it would be nice to hear that the land lord is somehow obligated to help with the problem. Like they have to put fire alarms in their rentals, maybe since it affects our health they should be certain that the mold is not harmful when they rent their property. Like I said we have a long way to go and educating the public to these facts would be a big help because it seems to me people are not aware of how they can help right at home.
